Car Fleet Supporting MTA Brags About Car Killing Commitment

With word that the MTA has been doling out company cars like candy to its top employees, the agency’s own eco-friendly promoting “Webinar” touting their commitment to removing drivers from the roads to reduce carbon commuting footprints is all the more relevant. It’s reported that the MTA maintains a fleet of about 60-something vehicles mostly for its highest salaried workers, all expenses paid, gas included. And yet mass transients boast about their car killing efforts in this playful ‘Sustainability and the MTA’ document (PDF doc): “Each day the MTA removes 3 million potential drivers from the roads, eliminating as much CO2 as 684,444 acres of forest.” They put this into perspective using handy maps of the boroughs comparing the MTA’s mass transit environmentalism to the amount of carbon dioxide typically absorbed by forests. And although the fare hiking agency drafted a 15-page report (PDF doc) for greening up, which includes recommendation WM4: “The MTA should encourage the use of local drinking water by its employees to minimalize bottled water consumption,” there’s not one mention of improving the “sustainability” of their car fleet in the entire document.
