This prayer phone booth installation in the Tramway Plaza at 59th Street and 2nd Ave. is a City government approved art project (scroll down, seventh item) built and erected by Dylan Mortimer, a recent graduate of the School of Visual Arts MFA program (he’s one of their blinky stars). Wait a minute! Where’s the separation of Church and State? “My goal is to spark dialogue about a topic often avoided, and often treated cynically by the contemporary art world,” says Mortimer. “I employ the visual language of signage and public information systems, using them as a contemporary form of older religious communication systems: stained glass, illuminated manuscripts, church furniture, etc. Save that Dylan. That’s some righteous PhD dissertation hooey. The booths will be up through November. After the jump, view a close-up of the stern prayer instructions.
