Among the many performances at the Coachella music festival, there was one act more disturbing and brutal than the rest. As hundreds of music fans looked on, three police officers beat down and repeatedly tasered a Naked Wizard who apparently wasn’t eager to throw a robe over his magic wand. Tasering a person who is violent is one thing. tasering a person to make them “Submit” to your will and put their clothes on is EXCESSIVE FORCE and TORTURE. The use of Tazers is for cases where the only other option is to use a gun. No one here would have said “he got what he deserved,” if they had shot him. So why is it OK to Tazer him? Because well he was “resisting arrest”. I couldn’t hear what the cops were saying that well, the video was poor. But I did not hear “if you don’t put your clothes on we’re going to have to arrest you”. Maybe it was said, maybe not. The sound quality was pretty decent, so I don’t think it was said in a way that he could have reasonably been considered to be under arrest. In fact, I’m not sure that he was told he was under arrest at any point.
So? My question. If he got what he deserved, then are you willing to go through that kind of treatment when sober? I sure as heck am not. Whether due to the influence of drugs, or not, he was not of sound mind. This seems to be a very good reason that police find to abuse people. Has happened to me twice because I’m not of sound mind (in their opinion, once clearly not, once I would argue it was a total abuse of power to arrest me, especially in that way).
If the police can argue “not of sound mind, therefor can’t remember the incident correctly”, they feel they can use anything up to and including deadly force. And yes, people have been killed by cops because they are in a public place, and not of sound mind. They’d rather shoot first, then find out that it was a “pen” they were being threatened with. Or in some cases not even threatened.
This is just another case of police brutality.

Many of the comments above insinuate that he deserved the tazing. I think that people rarely do. Honestly, the police could’ve gotten him away from the scene and probably gotten him to put his clothes back on by standing on each side of him, gripping his arms firmly, and walking him away from the scene.

Tell me, if a 70 year old woman is out wandering the streets in her birthday suit, refusing to put on clothes or go indoors, should the police use a Taser on her too? After all, they did warn her several times, yet she refused to comply.
What really makes you mad is the idea that someone disobeyed a police officer, and that person’s reason for doing so was that he was intoxicated, a reason you do not find to be valid. Yet in my example someone is also disobeying the police, only this person’s reason is senility, which you probably do see as a valid reason to disobey. In neither case is the subject posing any danger to anyone; not themselves, not the officers, not any bystanders, nothing. Yet because the man did not immediately obey the cop, this is grounds for punishment by Taser in your opinion.

Public nudity is only a crime if someone is offended by it, but at a festival that big I am sure there were plenty of phobics. I feel the level of force was appropriate (I don’t think he was feeling any pain). Indio Police gave him many chances.

These cops are totally using excessive force. They should have called for backup and got permission before attempting to subdue him. He was not a danger to himself, the public, or the officers that jumped him. I think they are very lucky the crowd did nothing but watch. Next time you see police brutality do something. I have no idea why Coachella security was not present or any officer of rank. I have been there every year and I see this everytime. Coachella, Indio Police, and Goldenvoice need to establish safer protocol when dealing with this type of situation (naked kooks) which happens a few times each day every year. These officers should never be allowed to work in a crowd again. They should be suspended and given desk jobs. Those cops did try to cuff him. Didn’t you see the “wizard” holding on to them and keeping the cop from using them? They got him to the ground and he continued to fight them. They were trying to keep his arms immobile without hurting him. He made a grab at a cops’ crotch and they still didn’t get nasty. It wasn’t until they tried to get his arms behind him and he resisted them enough to pull the two cops holding on to him to the ground, that they finally pulled out the tazer. The repeated tazerings, well you don’t know how much force the “wizard” was using to push up at the cop who was on top of him. By that point they probably wanted to make sure that he wasn’t going to be able to physically resist any longer.

I saw quite a few kids at Coachella, and I don’t think they should have to walk around that guy. The cops were too tolerant. The cops have to have the taser used on them as part of training so they know what it feels like.

He refused a lawful order. He resisted when they went to effect custody and the officers utilized less lethal force to overcome his resistance. I live in the Coachella valley about 5 miles from the music festival. It was hot the day the “wiz” had his unveiling. Now, if someone asked me to wrestle a fat, naked man (who was most likely stoned) in the dust and dirt on that almost 100° day, I gotta tell you that I would have had to take a “pass” on that one. The crap you have to put up with when you are a cop! How many in the crowd took pride in showing off their photos and movies to the their friends. Romans in the Colosseum watching people being mauled by lions, or gladiators hacking one another to pieces… Taliban sitting in their coliseum to watch people being stoned and whipped. And yet we still consider ourselves progressive and so much more advanced while we deride one another in the forum of a blog… simply because so many people stood around at a festival, hoping that something would happen.

Its somewhat amusing/somewhat depressing to see all of the back and forth arguing being exchanged here without people realizing that you are arguing two ENTIRELY separate premises. If we want to have intellectual discourse that can provide some insight into this curious cultural event that we are all trying to examine rather than just calling each other names like we’re 5, than we must not conflate all these issues into one! First issue at hand: was this man’s tasing and arrest circumstantially justified? Second issue: did the people standing around gawking at the scene have some sort of moral responsibility to intercede in some capacity–or even at the very least to just MOVE ON…or were THEY justified in sitting around and passively observing this scene as they would any other performance at the music festival? Just remember that no matter what your opinion on the first issue, it is completely removed from any opinion formulated regarding the second issue because whether or not the cops were justified, it still was a very real SCENE and as such people would have been gawking regardless. Personally, given the situation, I do not think it that out of line at a DRUGGED OUT MUSIC FESTIVAL for someone to be prancing around naked in a field. This is not a normal societal scene here people. This is a festy. So picture the late 60s for a fleeting, resurrected moment–dancing naked drugged out guy, not that aberrant, certainly not criminally so. Anyone that is accusing someone of ‘liberalism’ for this notion needs to become more learned before using terminology that they have merely heard on TV. Taking him to Coachella would’ve been way better than taking him to see him in some concert hall. We could’ve sat in the back and just hung out in the sun.
This made me cry. He wasn’t a threat to public safety or the cops. Does a human being really deserve such barbaric treatment just for being naked? If he refused to put his clothes on and they wanted to enforce the “crime” of “indecent” exposure they should have just handcuffed him the first time they had his hands behind his back and took him away. I work for the PD, and Officers are not trained to do as the three Officers done. Three HUGE officers stood and watched him, and asked him to put his clothes on, when they should have cuffed him and arrested him without force. The one Officer that weighed 350lbs should have been able to do the job himself, especially when he rammed his knee so hard into his back. I don’t know where you got your Training RAIDERJOE, but you need to be re-trained. Or you can always volunteer your time for IRAQ and bring this world to Peace with Tazer’s.
I am glad there is so much publicity about this incident. I also hope these Officers get suspended without pay. I do agree the naked hippie should be charged with a couple of crimes, but none of them being reason for such unreasonable force.

I’m open to other opinions, but that suspect, at that point, had to be taken into custody. My training is, by your standard, inadequate, but it has kept me alive for the past 11 years. I think it is adequate.

The police have a difficult job at best. THis drugged up dude is breaking the law. They asked him to put his clothes on but he escalated the issue. Standard and nationally and internationally accepted police procedures executed in this incident. If the level of resistance rises, so does the level of the police do in order to gain compliance from the subject. The subject was NOT complying in any way. Also, if the officers wanted to, they could have defended themselves when the subject put his hands on them like that. But, they didn’t. They asked him over and over to comply. He didn’t. He spit in the officers face and he still kept trying to do the right thing and not beat the guy. The tasing was totally reasonable and it obviously have not too much effect on the subject, because he was likely on P.C.P, or massive amounts of cocaine in order not to feel it. Also, it would have been unfortunate for the crowd if they tried to rush the officers in order to free the subject. At that point, the officers would have been able to use deadly force on the crowd in order to protect thier lives. So whoever made that stupid comment about rushing the police, is obviously not only retarded, but also has a death wish. We pay the police to do an incredibley hard job. This was very over the top, i was there but in the distance and yes it was the talk around the festival.. mainly because nudity at festivals, a place where it is almost 100% a fact you will see someone naked, is completely fine… but not in SOCAL because they have so many cops a couple guys feel they need to make a name for themselves to serve justice…. 5. Police are not just heartless “Nazis” with a bloodlust, and I have no idea why most people disrespect them. They’re just regular people with a job. Every time they have to kill, you think they feel nothing? And on top of that, they have to deal with people calling them “murderers” and “heartless”. You fail to realize that this stress is what causes things like the Rodney King incident. Another thing to remember is that they are human, just like you or me. We are not perfect, so we ALL MAKE MISTAKES. They had plenty of chances just to arrest him, but your adrenaline is pumping, and you’re not sure if the crowd is gonna attack, or if his buddy’s gonna open fire with a handgun, or whatever. So therefore, you’re not exactly thinking straight the whole time.
We can argue all we want about this, but none of it will undo their actions or change the past. We live in a land of freedom, so if you feel it was an inappropriate use of force, then speak up, please. But it’s no reason to cause more conflict.
Ã’ve only ever had bad experiences or grief from the cops. I guess they are supposed to be here to help us. But, that’s not been my experience. And from what I can see, this arrest was just garbage. I hope there’s some discipline for those officers. But even if it does happen, it’s likely no more than ‘paid leave’.
My favorite part of the video is when this chick comes up and shakes his hand, then as she turns to leave she gets a good look at the popcorn shrimp between his legs. The headline should have read, “Naked Wizard Makes Penis Disappear”

I hope all of you idiots that hate cops post it in your cars and front yards so when something happens to you or your family they won’t need to bother with you. This idiot had numerous chances to put his clothing on, and then when he was being placed under arrest he couldve just put his hands behind his back, but he decided to refuse and resist. No police officer has to walk away from an arrest because the person is resisting, in fact, isnt that when we really need the police? These cops obviously tried for quite some time before resorting to the taser. If someone just punched you in the face and the police showed up, then the guy decided that he didnt want to be placed in cuffs, would you want the cops to just leave the guy alone? Let the guy walk away?

If tasers are supposed to be used in place of guns, as a less lethal method of SHOOTING someone, that means that these officers would have pulled out a gun and SHOT this man for not putting clothes on. This is equal to attempted murder on the part of the peace officers and they should be charged as such.

This is how the police treat citizens everyday all around this country. We don’t have any personal civil liberties anymore. It’s shut up and do what you are told. This country has become a joke. Because of how I have been treated by the police in the past, I’m delighted anytime I hear about something bad happening to them. Most police officers have no capacity what so ever for intellectual thought.
Improper use of a taser, intervals were too long at a time. The police were right to do it but they should be charged with improper use of a taser.
Ok… this is beyond discracful (not talking about the guys dick) being naked is natural as is stated many times in above posts and yes alot of people aren’t comfortable with the idea seeing it as obseen or porn. Yes the guy was most likely intoxicated, yes he was exosing himself, yes he wasn’t doing what the cops told him to do, so what? If the cops had left the man alone and he was sober would anyone have been hurt by his nudity? No. would they be facing sever criminal charges? No. would everyone have been happy? Trick question, you can never make everyone happy, but Tasers are designed for use in extreme situations and aside from the fact the these were extremely FAT, STUPID, UGLY, ASSHOLE, PIGS there was nothing demanding the use (atleast 9 times including the initial zap) or a taser. Now the Big issue With society today in the U.S.A. and to a lesser extent Canada (where i’m from) is the fact that nobody wants to have to deal with anything nowadays everyone wants to just be able to call 911 and hope it’s all over. People give the police there power, people give the goverment there power, if you don’t give the government power it has none. All government’s and army’s and police force’s are powerful because people fear them, it may not even be know to you that you fear the police, army or government but if you can’t go up to any of the and treat the like any other person you don’t like or has offended you than you fear them. The fear i’m talking about is the fear of what the police will do to you if you say walk up and punch an officer in the face, well because we the people of planet earth have said we dont want to fend for ourselves we’ll pay other people to look after us and tell us what to do, we don’t want our freedom to get into a fight with someone, we want to pay you (the government, and in turn the police) to tell us it’s wrong to get into a fight and to shove us into little 6×6x6 square rooms when we do anyways. If you think a cop is any different than you or me than your right, the cop carrys a gun we don’t.
