Poster Boy Is Doing Something In Bushwick, But We’re Still Not Sure What

So the subway ad modifying vandal and newly christened gallery artist known as Poster Boy is doing some sort of art event at the 3rd Ward gallery in Bushwick and it’s being hosted by indie quarterly Pomp and Circumstance, but beyond that the details become awfully sordid. According to the Brooklyn Paper, local businesses like “Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales, Harper Perennial, and the Brooklyn Salsa Company” are giving him permission to cut up their ads. The public will then be invited to help “remix” them under his tutelage. But that’s not the case according to Poster Boy who slammed the Rupert Murdoch owned paper in the comment section:

“Who’s selling out? I’m giving people an opportunity to partake in some large scale collage. The ad’s are not provided by any sponsers. Dogfish , Harper, and the Brooklyn Salsa Company have offered to “go under the knife” but that would defeat the purpose of Poster Boy. I’ve indiscriminately “borrowed” the ads myself. Get your sh!t right: http://freewilliamsburg.com.”

Hmm. We’re not quite sure what Poster Boy means by “borrowed” in this case, but he also offered this explanation of the show on the FreeWilliamsburg website:

“This is not a show of [my] work. This is an opportunity to create [my] work yourself. This is for people who wouldn’t normally partake in vandalism. The materials will be provided by [me]. Hopefully this encourages people to rethink advertising and their environment.”

Well, if the ads aren’t unsanctioned, it’s not really “vandalism” but at this point, it’s too dizzying to even bother translating. Besides, it’s not like he was ever commissioned to modify ads before, right? We’re just going to pause for a moment and remember the good ol’ days.

  1. dumb guy

this poster boy is everything wrong with the art world picking up this so called “street art.” it just goes to show that it is all politics and $ fueled. if no one ever gave him any publicity in the first place, he wouldn’t be known at all. give ‘papa loves baby’ or ‘world peace not pieces’ some media coverage in the ny times and i bet they will somehow be seen as “legitimate artists” by some mindless reader with $.
