Spineless Artist Paints A Safer Picture of Obama
After backing out of plans to display his mildly controversial painting of President Obama wearing a crown of thorns, artist Michael D’Antuono is back to make his political point without any potentially contentious symbols. Titled “…What I Meant Was…” the new painting is a dulled down response to the blasphemy-crying critics that caused D’Antuono to cave in and withdraw his artwork.
Unfortunately, too many people were unable to see beyond the religious symbolism of the first painting to be able to appreciate the political statement I was trying to make.
The new painting portrays President Obama standing before a press corp wearing glasses colored by their political views. With this latest work, D’Antuono hopes to encourage people “to look at the issues objectively and to start to think for” themselves, a heavy-handed point that’s still overshadowed by the media whoring artist’s spineless retraction of “The Truth” in the face of criticism.

That’s horrid that this is happening. It’s hard to follow through with a piece of work that you’ve done and support only to have people not understand it. It’s even harder to have to change your idea and mold into something everybody can deem as palettable. But, then…..what’s the fucking point? If your voice was trying to speak about “thinking for themselves” and having the “shades” filtering information that they want to see……..then the crown of thorns was a perfect piece! The fact that nobody could see past the religious connotations is a big smack in the face about what you were saying to begin with! Shit, it’s taken all of us artists this long to find our voice….what makes it happen that we’re filtering what we’re trying to say, just so we don’t step on toes.

Honestly, if you think this is a ‘bad’ painting you need your eye’s checked. And as for ‘not having balls’; what f**king right have you arm-chair critics got to put this man down for doing what he thinks is the fair thing to do. Because you went to a pretentious art-school were you made loads of (meaningless) ’statements’ with your paint-brush buddies and now suddenly every piece of art made by anyone under 60 has to offend someone?
So glad he pulled the first one, it was awful, MILDLY offensive is an understatement. However it’s unfortunate that this painting is underwhelming. Maybe he should start painting something other than Obama.
It’s amazing how Christians are offended by a Jesus metaphor, but those same Christians weren’t at all offended by the horrific torturing of human beings during the past decade by the American government. What hypocrisy! If Jesus was real, he’d be far more offended by how Americans treated their prisoners than by the Obama picture.

The first painting wasn’t that good. That’s the real reason the artist pulled it. He was trying to be edgy for the sake of being edgy, while ignoring the statement he was trying to make. The second painting is better, but still nothing to really talk about.
Wow, sure is artfag in here. Give the guy a break, if he wanted to change up his repertoire, that’s his perogative. Maybe he realised late that the previous painting wasn’t the image he wanted to give himself.
Man, chill the fuck out. It’s all well and good to pontificate online, but I highly doubt you’ve ever been in the same position as this guy.
Neither of the paintings are particularly poignant or great, granted he can handle a brush better than I can, they both employ a very blatant and almost childish use of symbolism which is at best a mere attempt at a generic political inflammatory statement.
No great observation that isn’t made daily by any layman can be found in these pieces, this artists offers a sort of second hand housewife insight with this modestly titled painting.
Then again I guess if someone is so easily swayed and capitulates to the opinions and will of ignorant people who do not get his “vision”, it really speaks volumes more than any combination of words I could ever conjure up.
