WK Interact To Open Sponge Painting Show

Working in a strict color palette of black and white, street artist WK Interact paints and installs large murals and wheat paste portraits characterized by their movement and gritty texture that graffiti writers love to paint over. On June 27th, the New York based French artist opens “Motion Portrait,” an exhibition of his distorted street installations alongside looser six-foot square face paintings he made with a sponge and big brush. The show opens from 7 to 9 PM in Jonathan LeVine Gallery and is on view through July 25th at 529 West 20th Street, 9th floor.

As temperatures rise through the summer, so do tempers, typically leading to the highest murder rates of the year. The Times maps out six years of homicides and determines that “September Saturdays around 10 p.m. were the most likely moments to produce a murder.” But that’s months from now, so no need to worry about your mortality, yet. |NYT|

Rest In Piece: IZ THE WIZ

izthewhizwholecar_o

Graffiti writing pioneer IZ THE WIZ (Michael Martin) died last night from heart failure. The legendary vandal, president of The Master Blasters crew, has been described as the “longest reigning all-city king in NYC history” for his prolific work on several subway lines during the 70s and 80s. IZ was one of the main characters profiled in graffiti cult classic, Style Wars (9:38 mark) and is widely regarded as an influential figure in the movement. He was also a great guy and one of the humblest writers I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting, so here’s a toast in honor of IZ THE WIZ: To a graffiti writer whose name will never fade.

Che Guevara’s Granddaughter Goes Commando for PETA

The granddaughter of Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara is undressing for a new PETA campaign with the slogan “Start a Vegetarian Revolution.” With the permission of her family and a revolutionary spirit “in her blood,” 24-year-old Lydia Guevara posed nude, wearing only a beret and carrot-filled bandoleer that will hopefully inspire more vegetarians than her grandfather’s overexposed t-shirts inspire revolutionaries. |El Mundo|

Zagat’s latest nightlife survey offers some unsurprising insight into how New Yorkers are coping with the recession: they’re not going out as much and likely drowning their sorrows at home. Most of the 6,000 New Yorkers surveyed claimed to cut their nightlife habits by going out and spending less at cheaper bars and clubs. The survey also pegged the Lower East Side and Meatpacking District as not only the hottes, but also the most over-hyped nightlife neighborhoods, so take that as you like.

Not even the London Police can catch a break in Amsterdam. After getting permission from the owner of a building and painting a huge mural in the weed-filled city, “the City Council has threatened to remove it. Local residents are now actively rallying to save the painting.” |Wooster Collective|

The Fine Art of Joyriding

Two-wheeling sculptors, photo-shooting messengers, and velocentric painters are among the many bicycle inspired artists converging in downtown Manhattan for the Joyride art show tonight. The exhibition, part of the Bicycle Film Festival, takes place across multiple venues between Houston and Broome Street, a move that festival founder Brendt Barbur hopes will lead people to literally joyride among the various installations, performances, and parties in the neighborhood. ANIMAL got a sneak peek of the show while it was still under construction, so preview the work after the jump before you go see it tonight. Read more »
