The First Official Obama Product Endorsement

ft-obama

Even before Barack Obama took office, the Bam Brand™ was a powerful marketing force the likes of which had never been seen in politics. Then once he became the 44th president, Ikea, Maile dijon mustard, E Mobile, Berlitz, and some racist Russian ice cream maker quickly hopped on the Bam Branding bandwagon—none, of course, with the support of the President. But now, London’s Financial Times has scored a modern advertising coup. After two months of government hemming and hawing, the White House finally gave its approval for the paper to run this poster ad featuring a shot from a Bam election rally and a quote from an FT Obama interview. It’s a continuation of its “We live in Financial Times” campaign. I find it interesting that Obama approved the use of this sound bite; it makes him sound like a bit of a “I’m smarter than other people” snob. |Image: bestadsonTV|

The 2,000 goose genocide continued yesterday with USDA employees rounding up the birds on Randall’s Island, despite the fact that it was a migratory gaggle of Canadian geese that took out Sully Sullenberger’s passenger-filled plane not a local variety. |NYT|

Media Forces PETA To Respond To POTUS Fly Murder

PETA is normally more than happy to exploit events that can assist in their media whoring agenda, but in the case of President Obama’s fly-killing incident, it was news organizations that prodded them into action. The animal rights organization writes:

“Believe it or not, we’ve actually been contacted by multiple media outlets wanting to know PETA’s official response to the executive insect execution.”

But since they were asked, the group used the opportunity to reassure Buddhists that the president isn’t Siddhārtha Gautama and that in the future, he should use one of their “humane” insect traps.

The Animal Kingdom’s Lesbian Albatross

Scientists have determined that same-sex behavior is a “universal phenomenon in the animal kingdom” and that it’s “common across species” from gay house flies to lesbian Laysan albatrosses (pictured). But contrary to the standard male lesbian fantasy, these birds aren’t just engaged in hot feathery female-on-female action, they’re also committed partners that “can remain pair-bonded for life and cooperatively rear young.” |ScienceDaily|

There’s something sadly ironic about four teenage graffiti writers from Long Island getting busted in Brentwood by a business that calls itself: Noisy Toyz. Their hood points just dropped like today’s Dow Jones. |Newsday|

Cocaine Torch Burns Up Last Semblance of British Freedom

England’s tradition of highly aggressive Big Brother intrusion is long and storied, but continues to evolve. No longer content with watching every move of its citizenry via a highly advanced surveillance blanket of CCTV cameras, authorities now want to inspect nostrills too. And with the cocaine torch they can. For the past few months, real life Adam Sutlers have been testing partygoers outside nightclubs with the special ultra violet detection device. If your face lights up green, your guilty and police can then search you. The solution? Drink Red Bull. |BBC|

Chelsea Gallery Will Not Weather the Storm

After more than ten years in operation, Bellwether Gallery announced today that it is closing this summer. Over the years an array of artists exhibited with the Chelsea gallery, a few of which are featured above including Trevor Paglen and his explorations into the military’s secret installations and aircraft. Owner Becky Smith, who moved the gallery from its original location in Williamsburg to 134 Tenth Avenue in Chelsea, has decided to shut down the space in large part due to pressure from the current financial climate. In part, she wrote us: Read more »

Red Bull ‘Shot’, Cause ‘Blast’ Probably Wasn’t Appropriate

International cocaine-laced energy drink dealer, Red Bull, which one Russian official called “evil,” has a new product it’s releasing this summer: Energy Shot! Like coke, it can “fit anywhere, from your pocket to your glove box, and can also cause anxiety or potentially, typewriter face. It’s basically concocted from all the ingredients in a regular Red Bull, minus the healthiest one: the water.

Artists Bless Abandoned Church With Exhibit

After years of disuse, an abandoned church in Spanish Harlem has opened its doors for a new art exhibit on religiosity and spirituality. Closed since its congregation dissolved in the 90s, St. John’s Episcopal American Catholic Church on the corner of Lexington Avenue and East 102nd Street, is the setting for “Sacrosanct,” a group exhibition produced by curator Sophie T. Lvoff. The exhibition opened on Sunday with ten artists sculptures, photographs, videos and installations, including an intensely self-referential Last Supper scene, inside the once holy space.
