Did the NYPD Help One of Their Own Conceal a Deadly DUI?
City prosecutors are alleging that the NYPD worked to cover-up the fact that an off-duty officer was hammered on Sunday night when he crashed his car, resulting in the death of a 33 year-old New York woman. The district attorney’s office says that Officer Andrew Kelly of the 68th Precinct, who had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech at the scene of the accident, was supplied gum and extensive amounts of drinking water and wasn’t administered a blood/alcohol test until 7 hours later, a test that turned up a zero score.
Reports the New York Post:
If Kelly — who prosecutors said smelled of booze, had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech at the scene — had been given the gum, it would not have affected the blood test. Drinking water could lead to faster urination, which would likely rid the body of only a relatively minor amount of alcohol, experts said.
The bombshell 0.0 blood-alcohol test could cripple the criminal case against Kelly for killing Vionique Valnord in Flatlands because it may now be impossible to calculate how much booze was in his system when the crash occurred.
An additional note about this case: Kelly, the cop, is white, while Valnord, the deceased victim, was black. Just saying.
