Snickers Mocks Hungry Africans

AFRICANS_snickers Every six seconds in the world, someone—probably living on the continent of Africa—dies of hunger. Not at all related to that fact is this: Snickers will be available in Russia next week for the first time ever! Not at all related…until BBDO Moscow created this teaser TV spot for the candy featuring an African tribe waiting for…something (A U.N. truck of rice? A Snickers shipment from relatives in a foreign land?). These days, we have to be cautious about posting YouTube videos and calling them actual TV commercials (remember 9/11). But, according to adme.ru, Russia’s leading ad posting site, this spot, created by BBDO Moscow, is the real deal and has already run on the country’s “federal channel.” Jump and watch and gape—the copy line at the end translates as “coming soon.”

Who in that ad looked starving? The men were muscled, the elders were plump, and they had goats. Nobody looked sad, hungry … or mocked. I think you're trying to find something that isn't there.

  2. Then, explain why an African tribe was used in a Russian ad?

  3. Me

Thats a damn lie, snickers were sold in Russia for at least 15 years now.

  4. An African

I agree with guav, not everyone in Africa is starving. Stop trying to find something here that isn't. Everyone in the video looked pretty well fed, they even had goats.

  5. AGAIN, I ask: why then use an African tribe in a Russian spot teasing the arrival of Snickers? I'm waiting for your brilliant explanation. Also, the title of the post at the Russian site is:

    "Hungry Africans advertise Snickers."

I wouldn't go so far to say that they mock hungry Africans. Do they look hungry in the ad? I wouldn't say so. But I do agree with you when asking why they used an African setting for the ad. You have to think about the target market, ie Russian's. I don't really see how they drew the line relating an African tribe to their Russian consumers (I have never been to Russia so maybe I missed something? =p).

Not a bad idea but poorly executed. They could have easily done the exact same ad with some bored looking Russian's sitting around a fire in those funny winter hats while drinking vodka from a bottle looking around waiting for something to happen. I think the guys above missed your point.

I'm so sick of people talking about Africa as if it is a small, barren country. It's a CONTINENT of about 50 different countries filled with various types of people, some who are starving and some who have plenty to eat. Just because someone lives in a clay hut does not mean they are starving.

The people in the commercial are very healthy-looking and the goats were just waiting to be milked and/or eaten (all of which I’m sure was purposeful—ad agencies are usually very deliberate with their execution); there’s no indication that they’re starving. I think the commercial is trying to say, “I live in a hut in the middle of nowhere and it will be a long time before Snickers is sold here. You Russians are so lucky to already have it.” End of story. It’s a crappy commercial, but that’s beside the point.
