New York Street Advertising Takeover, the Sequel

Unnamed

After the success of the last New York Street Advertising Takeover, Public Ad Campaign’s Jordan Seiler organized another contingent of conspirators—including ANIMAL’s own Will Sherman—to liberate the mostly illegally operated NPA billboards in Manhattan and Brooklyn on Sunday. Like last time, the first wave of volunteers in nifty OSHA-approved neon vests, buffed the ad spots with white paint, followed by a second wave of artists who added their unique touches, turning the locations into temporary public canvasses and challenging the outdoor advertising company’s claims to legitimacy. Presidential Portrait Highlight’s Obama’s Star Power

Inspired by his studies of African patterns and possibly the Belgian girl with a celestial face tattoo, artist Tsevis created this “Stars and Stripes” mosaic of President Obama. Unlike some Obama portraitists, Tsevis offers some insight and credit for the photo and process behind his beautiful artistic manipulation.

Video of BMX Duo Dropping Down A Building

Two BMX riders bombed down the sloped side of a Rotterdam skyscraper for this video that’s surprisingly not preceded by the words, “Don’t try this at home.” After playing around in the dark on their glowing bikes, Mark Vos and Boy Janssen head for the roof of the Willemswerf building and drop down the steep face. Shot from several angles, it’s compelling footage but pretty suspect. After all, not even Jackie Chan pulled off that 5-story drop after his “Who Am I?” slide. Watch for yourself below. Read more »

On Longing for the Good Ole Days of Photography

neworleans1

Earlier in the week I ran across a quote attributed to legendary photographer Sam Haskins. It goes: “A photographer went to a socialite party in New York. As he entered the front door, the host said ‘I love your pictures – they’re wonderful; you must have a fantastic camera.’ He said nothing until dinner was finished, then: ‘That was a wonderful dinner; you must have a terrific stove.’” This quote got me to thinking a bunch about modern photography, more specifically on how it seems, at least to me, that the proliferation of digital cameras is killing it. Ry Fyan Shows Off Cut and Paste Skills

Next week artist Ry Fyan opens an exhibition of recent collages at Half Gallery. Similar to his assemblage process of painting, Fyan draws from a variety of sources, seeking “imagery and symbols that exude an uneasy frisson, a cognitive dissonance if you will, which seem to resist quick uptake and consumption.” The solo show will open from October 26th through November 12th at Half Gallery, 208 Forsyth Street.

Totally Not Racist Rush Limbaugh Falls For Fake Obama, aka ‘Little Boy,’ Thesis Quote

Oh hey did you listen to the Rush Limbaugh show on the radio today? You didn’t! Aw man you missed a freakin’ doozy! Rush totally pwned our little negro Muslim boy president when he read some quotes from his Columbia University thesis paper, the secret one he and Glenn Beck have been desperately trying to get their hands on, and the quote proves that YES, Obama probably does wipe his black ass with the constitution each morning because he obviously HATES the constitution if he wrote something mildly critical about it, you know, 30 years ago, and now Rush has the hate-cocks of all of his mindless drones fully engorged. But wait, there’s a problem: the words that El Rushbo quoted Obama as having written on his show were taken from a poorly executed piece of satire, in other words, a fake news story. Wah-wah! Hobos Vandal Exhibits the Write Method for Staying Up

It’s not just graffiti writers that are out there adding character to freight trains, there’s hobo taggers too–technically they’re the original pioneers that have been adding their messages and illustrations for the past hundred years or so. And in that time, they’ve learned some of the key rules to the game, mainly, don’t mess with or go over the numbers on the trains, it’s the surefire way to make railroad workers quickly buff the work. SAWDUST knows what’s up and acted accordingly while drawing on this freight benched in Orange County, CA. Learn! More close-ups over here.
