Alleycat Cyclists Race for Thanksgiving Charity

Armed with shopping lists, nearly 120 cyclists set off from Madison Square Park on Saturday to buy food for the homeless, as quickly as possible. Now in its 11th year, the annual Cranksgiving race, which has spread to more than 13 other cities, saw its largest turnout yet with couples on tandems, furry creatures on mutant choppers, NYT building climber and photographer Renaldo Clarke as well as myself coming out for the alleycat-style Supermarket Sweep.
After hitting a self-chosen series of grocery store checkpoints, participants dropped baby food at collection points in Chelsea and the East Village before finishing at St. Mary’s Church on the Lower East Side, where hundreds of food items and dollars were donated. The race was won in 51 minutes by bike messenger Crihs Thormann who will continue his charity, helping serve Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. |NYT|
