The only person that knows why this woman jumped from the Brooklyn Bridge is the woman herself, and perhaps anyone she chooses to confide in. The assumptions being made here are extraordinarily arrogant, and some, even cruel. It´s indicative of the sort of society we´re currently living in and contributing to, where we seem to be poised ready with callous judgements about people we´ve never met and know nothing about. We speak as though our opinions are confirmed facts, eagerly spreading malaise, bitterness, and contempt in a world that is already saturated with these and worse. A little more compassion and charity for each other, expressed by each one of us in our own way, would contribute to creating a better society from which we´d all benefit. What goes around, comes around....

I witnessed the suicide of a friend, and finally understood the meaning of tragedy, because there was nothing that could have dissuaded him. He suffered the worst form of multiple sclerosis as a result of Agent Orange poisoning in Vietnam, and was at the stage where in a few more days he might not have been able to squeeze the trigger of the pistol that ended his life. Anyone who could joke about this is a sick person indeed, and probably has not suffered enough in life to identify with another's pain, or seen hope at an impossible distance. Only an insensitive and ill-bred child could find something amusing in such a sad thing. Life is an exquisite gift, and only the inability to endure more pain can induce one to throw it off.

She'll get attention. Attempted suicide may be prosecuted as a felony in NYS but is it is more likely she'll be taken to a hospital for an evaluation. If she is deemed a danger to herself or others, she'll be institutionalized and treated.

I am stunned at the cruelty from some of the people here who commented. One day if you suffer a severe depression you will learn that prolonged hopelessness is consistent with suicide attempts and what a terrorizing and horrific existence it is to suffer from. It's time to start according mental illness some respect. Shame to anyone who would speak so poorly of someone obviously suffering in an excruciating way.

I have some theories of why this lady attempted suicide. As I live in North Beach, San Francisco and have had discussions about suicide with the U.S. Coast Guard who tends to suicides and attempted suicides off the Golden Gate bridge, where according to them only ten (10) have survived.
This lady that went off the Brooklyn bridge did not jump from the highest point of the bridge thus guaranteeing her potential survival.
I suspect her jump was timed around Christmas and most likely seeking attention from a boyfriend/husband or family member (s) or just P.R.
We (North Beach, S.F.) have an individual who jumped off a roof survived and got much attention. Recently he again jumped out a window 2 story's up six months after his first jump. This tells me his poetry is not selling and to boost sales he jumps again but out a 2 story window.
People like this are very selfishly self centered and worship attention. www.CaptainDemocracy.wordpress.com

The woman was probably a failure at everything she attempted-including her suicide attempt. She must be thinking WHATS WRONG WITH ME????

Next time she should put rocks in her pockets.
