Just as Roman emperors staged battles to amuse the masses, artist Duke Riley is putting on a naval battle in Flushing Meadows. Inside a World’s Fair Ice Skating Rink, the artist and his legion of collaborators are preparing for a Naumachia-style skirmish, building five boats from plant life and garbage harvested in the park. But rather than drafting prisoners and slaves to the fight, Riley has conscripted the Queens Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, Bronx Museum of the Arts and El Museo del Bario to spar with “baguette swords and watermelon cannons” before an audience wearing mandatory togas. “Those About to Die Salute You” takes place at 6 PM on Thursday, August 13 in a reflecting pool by the Queens Museum of Art.
