As of Friday, Pit Bulls and 26 other “vicious and threatening†breeds will be banned from city public housing projects. Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr., who failed to convince state legislators to ban pit bulls completely in New York City, praised NYCHA’s decision: “Finally someone is realizing that these potentially dangerous animals have no place in a confined urban space.” The new regulations also ban dogs weighing more than 25 pounds, though any dogs registered before Friday may stay. |NYDN|

How can poor people that need to live in public housing afford pets? Shouldn't every penny they make go to their family's sustenance? Maybe the state should begin to investigate these people that live in public housing and determine if they really need it.
The problem in this city is not with breeds such as pits or rotties themselves- the problem is w/cruel, ignorant, and abusive owners who get these animals for alterior motives such as dog fighting rings (ala Michael Vick), or to generally intimidate the public as an extension of their "gangsta" lifestyle.
What needs to be done to keep the public safe in city housing is to get the cops to go after the dog fighting rings and those breeders who promote this illegal and cruel "sport." These are all wonderful and loyal animals who have been tethered and mistreated their whole lives by bad people. Go after the people and not the dogs, who by the way, are also used as working and therapy dogs by those who truly care for them and know how to train these animals. I have a goreous pit/rottie mix who sleeps in the bed w/me and my husband since she was a baby- she can perform tricks and is friendly to all people and animals because we've raised her that way.
