So New Orleans’ own Harry Connick Jr. appeared on an Australian “talent” show called “Hey Hey It’s Saturday.” One of the acts on the show was a group of white men in black face called the Jackson Jive, a parody the Jackson Five. Harry was a bit offended by their act and wasn’t shy about saying so.
On this, I think my friend Matt Ufford at Warming Glow said it best:
I understand that other cultures have different senses of humor, and just because something is conventional wisdom in America doesn’t necessarily mean it should translate across international boundaries. But I think the rest of the world really needs to follow our lead on the blackface issue. You can tell us what is and isn’t racially insensitive after your country fights a war over white people owning black people.
