While out brunching in the East Village, a few bike messengers caught a thief trying to steal one of their rides. After batting him around a bit, one of the messengers began videotaping as they beat him over and over with the message, “Don’t steal bikes, bro!†The camera man’s footage and firsthand account of the bike thief beatdown is below.
Here’s the story. I was having brunch on first ave and first street with a a couple of friends including Alfred .It was a pretty sunny day and a good there was a good amount of pedestrian traffic .Nothing unusual. Alfred went out to make a call and spotted someone looking over his bike. Nothing unusual ,he got a hot ass cannondale with hot ass wheels.the guy was average looking, had a helmet and a bag.looked like your average joe casual biker.Suddenly this dude gets on his knees and pulls out a drill. At first Alfred thought he wanted to steal his wheels, until he saw the drill. Is this what it has come out to?!people stealing bike with drills?Anyways as he was getting ready to drill the ulock,Alfred comes in the restaurant and yells,!yooooo someones trying to steal my bike, lets go get him.and let me tell you this ass hole tried stealing the wrong bike.first it was a bike messengers bike and second it was Alfred’s bike and the motherFkr got a temper sometimes.so we roll out to this dude and start pounding him.my first instinct was to get my U lock and bang on him,but my bike was already locked up so , we bumbrushed this dude and started pounding him.Everybody is watching and wondering why this dude is being plumeted ,but at that point we don’t give a fuck.we had to make sure this asshole dosen’t do it again.me personal i have had 2 bikes stolen,in like a month apart.fuck that shit.he did’t even look like a bike thief!so while pounding him i reach out to put my phone in my pocket and realized i had a camera on my wait.i pulled it out and captured the second half of the beating!

sorry, it's not a beating if the guy is walking away. points for effort.
Humiliating and disgraceful. No matter how expensive your bike is, it does not warrant beating someone up. Especially as he backs away from you with his hands up. Detain him and call the cops.
Grow up!
shut the fuck up you dont know shit
Fuck that beat his ass..u are lame son
@n
though, i'm sure he will think twice about stealing a bike now that he is on film AND was humiliated in public on top of that (and now internet). calling the police is cowardly unless something SERIOUS has happened and stealing bikes surely doesn't fall into a category of matters that mean much in a raw flowing city.

Have you ever even reported a petty crime before to the already over burdened NYPD? Let me give you an idea of what happens…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
I have to say that while I don't usually advocate violence, reporting this guy to the NYPD would have accomplished nothing but annoying the cops, as they have more important things to do. I also agree that I bet he'll think twice before attempting to steal a bike again. I'm actually glad the messengers in question didn't commit to a real "beatdown," as that would have been overkill for the situation. Good on them for taking care of that weasel!
@N–Jeez, what is your issue? It isn't as if they took the Medieval approach and chopped off his hand for attempted theft. I think they used just the right amount of force to get the point across. Grow a pair, dude.
YouTube pulled the video dude
can someone put the video up somewhere else and let us know where it is? thanx.
hey N, where the fuck do you think you are!
this junkie should have got his head kicked in…striped shirt hipster guy should have snapped his leg, check out that screen still..thats prime stomping material!!!!!
n FUCK YOU
YOOO SOME FIXIE GAY TRIES TO STEAL YO BIKE, YOU BEAT HIM FOR THAT, I CAN STEAL YO BIKE YOU WOULD LOVE THAT YEAH???
N- So, by detaining him, they're going to ask him to stay and wait for the cops who are going to take an hour to get there and be seriously pissed they're dealing with this? You grow up and learn to take responsibility for your life.
But, these dudes should have been able to do more damage. A for effort. C for execution.
Ok, kiddies, here's the reality. That thief got off lucky.
The cops would not do anything if they were called, if they ever showed, because the crime was prevented.
This is not only (attempted) theft of property, but also (attempted) theft of someone's livelihood.
If you have ever had something like that happen to you, you know how much it can damage your life.
And that thief will steal again. They should have left him bloody.
Cops can't do anything. I know first hand and feel the way these guys do.
To N,
It sucks really badly that there are shameless thieves out there that take YOUR things and don't even think twice about it. Good on the hipster for letting him have it. Sometimes street justice is what it takes to teach a low-life, lazy and inconsiderate thief a lesson. This guys deserved every bit of that beating.
Everyone can agree this guy got off easy. The guy in the horizontal striped shirt looks about ready to beat the stuffing out of the thief. And you have to agree, the nypd wouldn't do anything by the time they were to arrive, this was handled perfectly, it looks like you got the guy's tools, which is AWESOME. Justice served.
WORD!!!!
i used to work for quik trak back in the day… i can't even count how many bikes i had stolen over the years… i wish i was there!
nice job boys, fuck that dude.
street justice, nigga.
N either doesn't live in NYC, or needs to go outside more often. And anyone who flatly denounces violence de facto, all the time, needs to think harder.
Let me explain, to people outside of New York- you're on your own here. I was shocked by it when I first moved here, but it's true. If there hasn't been a major felony, the cops aren't coming. Even then, you might wait 30 minutes. These guys roughing this guy up? This is the only deterrent there is, and I applaud these guys for filling their SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY to not stand for it.
DONT STEAL BIKES BRO!!! HAAHAHAHHA FKING LOSERS. ID SHIT ON BOTH THOSE GUYS AND STEAL THEIR BIKES.
I'm generally opposed to violence but I'm willing to be reasonable. If I was there, that guy would have left with a serious limp, or in an ambulance. And I'd make damn sure he'd have a hard time operating a drill anytime soon. Ya know how it goes, "Well officer, we tried to place him under a citizen's arrest until you got here, but he went crazy and tried to assault us. Then we did what we had to do defend ourselves." What NYC cop is gonna question that? They know the deal!
Practice for next time:
"Oh man, you lost your keys?"
"Yeah."
"Lemme give you a hand with that. I know how to get those opened in like 2 seconds" and take the drill.
BAM!! BOOM!! CRASH!!
Damn! I slipped and accidentally hit you in the head a bunch of times with an 18V battery attached to this drill! Let me call the police and an ambulance for you. Don't move: You don't want to get injured any more.
If he walked away, it wasn't a proper beat-down. You CAN give him a proper beat-down AND have him arrested.
I wonder how many stolen bikes were back at his apartment? I wonder how many bikes he's stolen since then?
justified, warranted & necessary.
He got what he deserved. Absolutely.
Whether he should have gotten more of a beating or not, who knows? Can we say it was his first time or his hundredth time? Serving someone justice for their offense doesn't require speculation beyond what happened at that scene. A more extreme punishment would be in order IF the guy managed to break the lock. But if someone thinks that its right to break his hands for merely attempting to steal a bike, I'd say that would be too harsh a punishment. In the video, we don't get to see how far he got with the lock so there's no point in wondering if the guy is a veteran in thievery or not. There's a reason why the justice system follows the principle, "innocent until proven guilty."
And as for calling the cops, I agree with the majority opinion here. Humans are totally capable of sorting their problems out. It should only be when you can't sort our problems that you call the police. With this particular incident, things got sorted.
i think there are two very good points raised here. One, the police are not enough. Two, violence is not the answer. While beating someone up might be fun, it doesn't reflect well on the human species. how can we expect to be a peaceful society when all it takes is an attempted bike theft to make us violent?
I think there must be a more creative solution for dealing with things like this.
It's sad to see anyone get punched, especially a guy begging not to be. However, people in NYC are constantly ripped off. You can't have anything nice, cause someone will either vandalize it or steal it.
Guy gets a sweet new bike, and some jerk tries to steals it. I understand the anger, but it's still disturbing to see.
The good news? I bet he won't do it again.
good stuff. wish you had given him to cops, also
i say well done…..

Two, violence is not the answer. While beating someone up might be fun, it doesn’t reflect well on the human species. how can we expect to be a peaceful society when all it takes is an attempted bike theft to make us violent?
to this i have to disagree. for one are you are comparing the use of violence towards a thief with the actions of many others within history? or the disgraceful actions of the current American government. If you want to talk about the human species, you cannot even attempt to understand the in working's of a human mind.. one thing we do know is once we as human's learn something, the subconscious will therefor continue the practice, it will then take a large conscious event for you to unlearn it. this guy likes to steal bikes. Maybe this is what he needed to realize that it is unacceptable as a human being to take someones property and livelihood away.
n your a pussy, words of someone that doesnt have a nice bike. . . beat that losers ass, dont ever steal a bike, hes lucky he walked away!
If I caught someone stealing my bike I wouldn't got this easy. These guys are missing everything, there are things they could pick up off the street and beat him with all around them.
Not sure the guy would have learnt his lesson. He seemed very calm and appeared to have a rehearsed response with a goal of not perpetuating the situation in a way that would result in a bigger beat down. Looks like the altercation stopped at the right time (before anyone got seriously injured or even killed).
The thieves a pro (helmet and all)
should have raped him
I enjoy, result in I discovered just what I was taking a look for. You’ve ended my four day long hunt! God Bless you man. Have a nice day. Bye
wouldve been more ompressive had they used the drill he was apparently caught holding. also, two of you? on him? jeez tough nyc boys. pffffffffffft!
To that person who said no matter how expensive the bike is, it doesn't warrant beating someone, you don't know what you're talking about. I have a $3000 bike that I've spend over $2000 more for additional upgrades. Someone messes with that, they're getting a fucken beatdown. Period.
