A photographer was surprised at how a place as rundown as Coney Island can get away with charging almost $9 for a Nathan’s hot dog, fries and a soda.

this photo is the Childs Building, a terracotta palazzo that's one of Coney Island's four NYC landmarks. does it look rundown? it's an architectural wonder. maybe the photographer didn't have time to look closely at the details including the marvelous sea-themed medallions. maybe the photographer was busy looking instead at the metal gates covered with graffiti. On weekends the gates are thrown open and the building is Lola Staar's Dreamland Roller Rink. There are many wonderful photos of parties at the roller rink and the building's interior in the flickr group Coney Island Is Alive and Kicking in 2009!
As for Nathan's, it's an institution, the meal is worth every penny and the building should be landmarked. Coney's other official landmarks are the Cyclone Roller Coaster, the Wonder Wheel and the Parachute Jump. Coney Island has 56 operating rides and 27 says left this summer. Please come out and patronize Coney Island's family businesses to keep them alive and thriving!
This is a gorgeous building. Not sure what the photographer (or this post) is talking about
