PR-wise, cannabis is having a stellar year and the good news keeps on rolling in. A new study from the University of Pittsburgh concludes that weed IS NOT a gateway drug. This long held belief, propagated by the government and organizations like a Partnership for A Drug Free America, is patently false! Doing bong hits will not automatically turn you into a crack-smoking alcoholic who eventually graduates to heroin and other harder drugs. It’s more of a ‘kids will take whatever they can get their hands on’ theory says researchers:

While the gateway theory posits that each type of drug is associated with certain specific risk factors that cause the use of subsequent drugs, such as cigarettes or alcohol leading to marijuana, this study’s findings indicate that environmental aspects have stronger influence on which type of substance is used. That is, if it’s easier for a teen to get his hands on marijuana than beer, then he’ll be more likely to smoke pot.
