I've never understood, and still don't, how a single speed bike means you're "keeping it real". What is it about derailleurs that annoys? The wind resistance?
Only an asshat would claim that fixed gears are keeping it real and not be joking when saying that.
However, have you ridden a fixed gear? The amount of control you have over your speed is much better than with a freewheel and brakes.
And what do you need all those gears for in NYC anyway? There aint no hills, son.
