The colossally inept MTA doesn’t give a shit what the public, straphanger associations or parents have to say, they just passed the 2010 ‘Doomsday’ budget that will include a bunch of highly unpopular measures like service cuts and no more free MetroCards for public school students. |1010Wins|

Of course they don't.
If they were serious about cutting costs, they would get rid of all the conductors, like any modern transport system in the world did years ago.
The MTA used to pay 33% of the cost of these passes. Now they are forced to pay over 90% of them after the schools and the state cut their support for them. There is no reason that they should be forced to shoulder the cost of them – the school system is responsible for ensuring transportation. The MTA has said it will reinstate the passes if they are funded for.
