Back When Bushwick Was Really Gangster
The voice-over for this vintage NBC news report from 1976 warns: “This is a part of Brooklyn that few people see anymore. It is the 83rd precinct, a battleground for the police and young street criminals.” Ha. That would place it smack dab in the middle of Bushwick. Watch this rare footage about the legendary hell-raising ‘Devils Rebels‘ as they battle an equally grimy gang: the NYPD.

Fierce! Those were the days when COPS could be COPS – good 'ol Irish and Italian cops could bust heads old-school style. New york was a dirty, corrupt, gang and drug-riddled kingdom, and you really had to watch your back then. Makes me really miss "Life On Mars" – a recent TV show about NYC cops in the 70's that was cancelled by ABC. Michael Imperioli brilliantly played a NYC Detective who had to deal with this kind of shit every day, and he was a bit of a degenerate himself. I Would love to see similar footage from the same era taken in Times Square, aound the peep houses and Minnesota Strip, before Times Square became an extention of Disneyland!
