Art Dealer Pleads Guilty, Blames It On the Alcohol
If only Robert De Niro Jr. waited before paying crooked art dealer Lawrence Salander $14K to get back six of his famous father’s paintings… Salander just plead guilty to defrauding clients and selling paintings he didn’t own and using them as collateral. The sentence: 6 to 18 years and paying back the stolen $120 million, including $1 mil to the De Niro estate.
The luxury addict (as emphasized by the prosecutors) turned bankrupt alcoholic (as emphasized by the defense) is sad (as emphasized by his wrinkly “sad face”). His lawyer states:
This is a sad day for Mr. Salander. However, it is a good result for him and it is a good result for the people who he is very sorry and remorseful to have hurt. We are very hopeful that he will be able to raise a meaningful and substantial amount of restitution.
Translation: “The jerk deserves it.”
Another noted victim of Salander swindling and rich-on-rich crime: “Hester Diamond, the widow of the late New York art dealer Harold Diamond and mother of Beastie Boys’ Mike D, who lost $6 million.” |WSJ, NYT, Reuters|

I never quite understood the alcohol defense.
"I stole from you."
"I stole from you and used the money to buy booze."
Does one of the above sound more innocent than the other? I guess everyone wants to claim they're a victim these days.
