Harmony Korine’s ‘Trash Humpers’ Picked up by Drag City Records, Opens May 7 At Cinema Village
Harmony Korine continues to cause severe irritation and confounded interest. A new trailer for Trash Humpers was posted recently, oddly by the Drag City record label (Joanna Newsom, Bonnie Prince Billy, etc).
Finished with the festival rounds, Korine (Julian Donkey-Boy, Gummo) swooped up a Best Film award at the Copenhagen Film Fest, oddly for a documentary. And, though proudly donning Indie Wire’s dub as #1 Undistributed Film, ‘Trash Humpers’ is opening May 7 at Cinema Village. So, as the trailer is quite self-explanatory, get ready for faux-old pervs in masks humping trash, NYC!
Forum trolling reveals the deal: The film is sold to Drag City Records for US distribution, with any domestic screenings pending approval, as confirmed by this xeroxed press kit (that features Korine’s Wikipedia bio with obnoxiously scribbled annotations).
Inspired by some “humpable” trash bags he saw, Korine staged this nightmarish VHS-imitation back home in Tennessee with some cronies and teenage bride turned baby momma Rachel Korine.
A film unearthed from the buried landscape of the American nightmare, TRASH HUMPERS follows a small group of elderly “Peeping Toms” through the shadows and margins of an unfamiliar world.
Harmony Korine has always been an insufferable douchebag and will remain forever an insufferable douchebag, but his stylizations — trailer park Herzog meets Paul McCarthy meets Stranded in Canton and vomits all over itself — can be hard to look away from, in a whimsical train wreck kind of way. And though the largely over-hyped ex-junkie director’s demeanor makes his smug mug oh so punchable, Korine and his “loser-gang cult-freak collective” might be onto something.
Looks like fun, anyway.

Um, I'm pretty sure this isn't ACTUALLY a documentary… As much of one as "Man Bites Dog" or "Spinal Tap"

I'm told that the Fest probably pulled the stunt to draw attention to itself. Sucks for the real documentaries that entered.
