Prune Nourry’s newest work is, literally, a cow-girl. The humanoid hybrid sculpture “Holy Daughter” comments on Asia’s trend of terminating pregnancies after diagnosing the fetus’s gender, because as everyone knows, girls are a useless burden.
Last time, Nourry cooked up a prenatal buffet. Now she’s cooking up controversy.
Currently at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris, the glass-eyed bronze goes to India in September. They’ve got a self-inflicted female birth deficit over there while cows are sacred mother-figures (Gau Mata). “Holy Daughter” points out that girls will eventually grow up to have people udders and working ovaries, so maybe they can come in handy too.
