Mayor Bloomberg’s proposed soda tax might do little to reduce consumption of sugary drinks, but it will raise money and that’s all that really matters. Although he’s attempting to justify the tax as a health initiative, it appears to be more fiscally motivated, than a genuine concern for reducing obesity. |NYT|

Wait, are they taxing drinks with sugar? Because all the most popular soda varieties have "high fructose corn syrup," instead of sugar. You only find sugar in their competition from small, independent, organic producers…ohhhhhhh, now it makes sense.

Depending on how they implement said tax (if it is per-ounce and includes fountain drinks), it could mean the end of Free Refills in New York.
Didn't the States secede from Britain because of taxes like this? The Townsend Acts and the Stamp Act and the Sugar Act. Hey wait, the SUGAR ACT! We declared independence from Britain and now the State and City of New York are implementing their own Sugar Act. Resist!
I am pretty sure the quietly reversed the Stamp tax prohibition a few years ago too.Either that or the clerk was all lyin' to me.
