Bosch’s Ass Flute
Doesn’t Work Very Well IRL

So, about the Bosch Garden of Earthly Delights… Those mutant harp-lutes and contorted drums? They sound “horrible” in real life. Yes, some musicologists and crafty dorks of Oxford constructed exact replicas of the musical instruments from the 16th-century painting. They’re “painful to hear.” Makes sense. They look painful to play too.

The academics were quite disappointed, especially since some of those surreal instruments were “impossible to make.” As opposed to the so-real mutants and monsters? But wait, here’s Nate Hill making one. Welcome to hell, folks.
