Untitled-1 When it comes to reggae and the Grammy Awards, if one of the nominees has the last name Marley, they usually win. Unfortunately, there’s no separate category for dancehall, which there should be, but according to Contact Music it wouldn’t have mattered anyway, because gay groups took a full page ad in Variety against Buju Banton before the event and that’s why he lost. They write: “And the protest piece worked – Banton’s Rasta Got Soul was beaten by Stephen Marley’s Mind Control Acoustic.” Although we can’t be sure why Buju lost, I’d venture to say it has more to do with his incarceration in a Florida jail for allegedly selling cocaine than it does some print ad (click to enlarge), two days before the show, when the winners have presumably already been established.
