Despite it taking the feds less than 72 hours to apprehend and interrogate the Times Square bomber, George Pataki, the governor of New York during the 9/11 attacks, isn’t about to give the Obama administration any credit and today, on Fox News, had this to say: “I don’t think you call it victory. I think victory would be being able to prevent these before they get to that point where you have a loaded van in Times Square.” But he’s not the only Republican to wretchedly politicize the arrest of Faisal Shahzad.
All the usual Conservative suspects were more than happy to exercise their right to be ignorant. Senator McCain said Shahzad shouldn’t have been Mirandized even though it’s mandated by the Constitution. Rep. Peter King agreed, adding the incorrect notion that the prerequisite for Miranda protections is U.S. citizenship: “I know he’s an American citizen, but still.’’ But not to be outdone, Senator Joseph Lieberman took things one step further and suggested that Americans suspected of joining a foreign terrorist organization be stripped of their citizenship without due process in civilian courts.
