An 18-karat solid gold Monopoly game set covered with hundreds of precious gemstones is being unveiled today at the Museum of American Finance, on Wall Street, because that’s exactly what we need right now… No, really, they actually think this is exactly what we need right now.
The museum CEO explained the uplifting power of the board game:
The game is symbolic to America and was popularized during the difficult economic times of the depression. We again face difficult economic times, and this incredibly valuable item will bring joy to our many visitors.”
And it’s right next to the financial crime and scandal exhibit. So get your broke, out-of-work self to the museum and bring your hungry kids, because there’s nothing as spirit-lifting as a golden reminder that the economy is just their game. You can look, but you can’t touch.

Libertarian that I try to be, I still find this waste of resources (materials, labor, and intellect) disgusting. Marina, did any of the links indicate the market value of this game (or, at least, the value of the gold used to construct it), or is the absence of that information indicative of embarrassment on the maker's and exhibitor's parts? Not to plug one of your sponsors, but I bet that gold Monophooey set would have set up quite a number of fresh-water wells.
