Russian bears are now using graveyards as “giant refrigerators” because there’s a shortage of mushrooms and berries and they’re starving but smart.
Residents of the Komi Russian Republic have reported numerous sightings of the beasts scavenging graves.
Not only do they eat human corpses, but they also mobilize. Masha Vorontsova, Director of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in Russia explains:
In Karelia one bear learned how to do it [open a coffin]. He then taught the others. They are pretty quick learners.
She then suggests that if you find a bear eating your decomposing loved one chucked over a tombstone, you should scare the bear away with fireworks or shoot.
Are the corpse-munching bears delivering displaced revenge for all those rich asshole hunter hobbyists and Chinese poachers who slaughter their kin? Maybe. Or maybe they’re hungry.
