Artist Kenny Scharf spoke up about his defaced mural and also responded to virtually every commenter, sparking quite the lively debate. He also mentioned his involvement with the ongoing “Gates Project,” whereby he has been painting over a bunch of graffiti-bombed metal shutters all around NYC. Does that mean he’s doing the same thing to vandals that he’s complaining about them doing to him, or is this different?

this is a valid point about going over tags for the gates project. i apologise for not considering this when i painted that gate. that was actually my first gate i painted (only 5 so far and 3 painted over the next day) the other gates were untouched when i painted them. although i think a tag is different than a huge mural it is a valid point and also if you see what the final painting was that i did on that gate you can see that i utilized what was there before thereby taking into account what was there before. i did not think about that the person who put that up wouldnt like it and for that im admitting my mistake. i should have thought about it. i never go over peoples tags in the street and i should have considered that even though it was sanctioned. (the gate was painted over by the store owners the next day) as far as the project itself, im not out to do it to sell my canvases i honestly love to do it and hope i can offer some inspiration and bring something good into peoples lives. i can only hope that. im sure most of you would love the offer of painting gates all over the city. do you blame me for agreeing to do a great project like this? and yes those new jeans i bought were too small and i know uggs are ug but it was cold! and please stop the threats im not out to f anyone up i know the world out there is fd up and people are angry but i honestly want to change that perception and make things better.

As the director for the gallery that helped initiate the gate project, I only feel its fair to help set the record straight… Kenny by no means meant disrespect to the graffiti community. You would be hard pressed to find any other gates / walls / windows etc where Kenny has painted over someone elses work. In fact, the particular gate that was selected for this post was flaking off and was going to be painted over by the shop owner that day. Kenny however suggested that he could incorporate the piece into his own work so that it would live longer. He does not intend to destroy. You would also find that though he is affiliated with the community, he does not consider himself a graffiti writer and is likely unfamiliar with code of ethics involved. Most of his outdoor work is sanctioned and he is a talented painter that happens to use spray paint, sometimes in the public realm… I hope this can be squashed with the knowledge that this happened on one gate and it wont happen again. Hopefully in the future there will be a level of respect for everyone involved.

The bottom line is that no one cares about graffitti, period. This is not the 1980's. Most intelligent people see graffitti as a symbol of low education and ghetto mentality. People that spray do it because they have absolutely no life and no future.
