Eduardo Gold, one of the winners of World Bank’s “100 Ideas to Save the Planet” contest is using his $200,000 prize to whitewash three mountains in Ayacucho, Peru. 70% of the world’s glaciers are in Peru and 22% of those have melted.
Gold is painting the mountains white with a mixture of lime, egg whites and water to create a cool, heat-reflecting micro-climate to nurture re-growth of icebergs. It’s just like NYC’s painting roofs white to go green initiative, only with a much more pungent smell.
