Nice Soviet girls never got to enjoy those “happy pin-up times of America’s postwar period,” so Russian photographer Irina Davis rounded up fellow expats to recreate the classic photographic style.

Pretty pictures they may be, it’s deeper than a fetish eye-party. The girls are floating in white to represent “the loss of their own organic life, the loss of identity” that comes via diaspora. Slav clues: The well-water buckets, “welcome bread” bakes, birch tree sauna whips and rooster lollies – all little totems to cling to… or forget.

Nice Girls are lamenting at Sputnik Gallery for a just little while longer. “Nice Girls,” Irina Davis, Sep 9 – Oct 23, Sputnik Gallery, NYC
