Last weekend, Patti Smith and Jonathan Lethem spoke to each other on stage at Cooper Union, no doubt stocked with resident artist/writer hopefuls. They probably didn’t find her advice very comforting.
Back when Patti arrived to NYC without money, lots of people could bum around cheap apartments, “build” or get swept up into communities that eventually spat out cultural figures. No more, not here.
Patti:
New York has closed itself off to the young and the struggling. But there are other cities. Detroit. Poughkeepsie… New York City has been taken away from you… So my advice is: Find a new city.
So, if you want to be a big deal and be paid to bestow coolness advice eventually, move. Patti also suggests Newark. |VanishingNewYork|

Jesus Christ, PLEASE come to Detroit.
You can be young and struggle in a gorgeous loft for only $600 a month.
Fuck patty smith in the ass with a fire hydrant!!!
I second the motion to fuck patty smith. She’s one of the few left alive from that generation and is now trying to remake her existence as being culturally significant. I wish she would GTFO of NYC and the rent controlled apartment she lives in. Fucking 2nd rate has beens should die already.
There’s nothing second-rate about Patti Smith.
Patti Smith = over rated. Why is it when people talk about punk rock and art in the 1970's New York they consistently get it wrong musically. ??
Patti Smith = Folk Rock , Blondie = Pop , if you want punk rock please refer to the Plasmatics, The Ramones or something with some punch to it.
There are plenty of people in New York struggling right now and making fantastic work , if they leave the city to and go elsewhere , they lose a major possible audience and attention to their work that New York can bring. The struggle gives the work a vitality that is lost elsewhere where things are easier.
Patti made some very valid points. Instead of attacking her and throwing four letter words around, you could listen to her advice. She is a genius musician and has lots of wisdom to offer.
I agree. You could easily come to NY with little money and start a living, however it would entail a shopping cart…
