Taking a huge leap past the Americans like a modern day Sputnik, the head of the Russian Federal Space Agency said that if a world-ending asteroid like Apophis even thinks about heading towards the Earth, they will have the technology to take that shit out. And they won’t even need nuclear weapons!
Unlike their counterparts in the West who can only bomb the Moon and destroy an apocalyptic space rock using special effects, Russia has a plan to the construct a real life spacecraft that could potentially knock an asteroid off a collision course with the planet using the “laws of physics.” While it’s very noble of them to to try and prevent cataclysmic events, the comrade running the Russian equivalent of NASA may have miscalculated his numbers just a bit, which is bad for humanity and terrible for public policy:
Anatoly Perminov told the Russian radio station Golos Rossii: “People’s lives are at stake. We should pay several hundred million dollars and build a system that would allow us to prevent a collision, rather than sit and wait for it to happen and kill hundreds of thousands of people.”
Our advice: Replace “hundreds of thousands” with “billions” and you’ll have a much better shot at ramping up public support. Oh, and it’s also a little more realistic…which helps in these matters. |Guardian|
