Joseph Brewer is having a shitty week. For the past few days, the 46-year-old Long Islander has been the lead suspect and by default, potential serial killer candidate, in the investigation of four dead women stashed near Oak Beach.

Police were initially searching for Shannan Gilbert, a 24-year-old from New Jersey with a career in prostitution who was last seen on May 1st at Brewer’s summery home, which isn’t too far from where they stumbled upon the grisly find.

However, the authorities now say that Gilbert wasn’t among the bodies discovered and the only thing that Brewer may have done wrong, was solicit her from Craigslist and then have to admit it to the world (as well as the elderly mother, wife, and teenage daughter he lives with in West Islip.).

Of course, that doesn’t explain why the young woman was acting hysterical, went frantically knocking on a neighbor’s door late that night, and has been missing ever since, but don’t worry says Police Commissioner Richard Dormer, it’s not like there’s a “Jack the Ripper running around Suffolk County with blood dripping from a knife.”

A source sent in this shot from earlier today of an Eyewitness News van parked outside Brewer’s West Islip home making this incident all the more embarrassing.

He told the Post:

I’m waiting for someone to knock on my door and say ‘smile! You’re on Candid Camera. This has been a complete nightmare. I didn’t do this. I have a family. I have a young daughter. I’m not capable of something like this.
