To be fair, this TSA worker at La Guardia Airport could have been on break, but taking a nap at the same gate where your blue-shirted colleagues are about to execute a secondary screening on passengers is not a good look, especially considering the recent string of follies beleaguering the federal agency. Update: According to an inside source she is in the process of being terminated.

WTF, this is OD. Some people really shouldn't have camera phones, fucking pricks

'To be fair, this TSA worker at La Guardia Airport could have been on break'
To be not fair, I'm posting this picture of a tired worker anyway and titling it with the sarcastic 'Your TSA Hard At Work' without her face blurred and identifying the airport she works at because TSA-bashing is in enough right now that I can publicly shame their workers doing normal things. Next on animalnewyork, 'Your Bailout Dollars Hard At Work': Bank of America cashier seen eating lunch at her desk*
*could have been on break
If she was on break then she should go to the break room/lounge and nap out of the public eye. It's the equivalent of walking into a police station and seeing a cop asleep at his desk.
John sometimes the break rooms are 10-15 mins a way.
i hope the reason this lady is napping is because she works a second job at night and i hope her son sees this.
John hit it on the head. You don't take a nap at the office period.
Also, I should clarify: she did assist her colleagues in the secondary search about 10 minutes later. Her job was to direct people to be randomly searched or not.
So this is just about people sleeping at work? Do you *really* care where TSA employees take their breaks? Sure, it looks bad for the company but how does this fail in corporate decorum affect you?
Were she actually sleeping when she wasn't supposed to can we really complain about it when we think random search security theater is a joke to begin with? And should we post her picture and location for all to see because she's an easy TSA target despite it putting her job in jeopardy? We've all done things at work that were technically against the rules, in the end she's one of 'us'.
The TSO was on a break and appearently not feeling well. This does not excuse her actions. Local TSA Management has seen the photo and took immediate action.
@parker
this person has the authority to search my personally belongings, judge whether or not i am allowed on the plane to travel and able to detain me until a state or government official can take me prisoner.
While at the security point this person holds a home land security position and can make or break my traveling engagement or even smudge my police record if she felt the need to.
Best Buy employee taking a nap? Who cares! Dunkin' Donuts employee catching some z's? Go for it! A TSA home land security agent sleeping inches away from their guests….come on now!
So Parker, i hope you sympathize with this woman when she asks you to be wanded for an extra five minutes and stand to the side while they search your bag for another ten just because she's cranky and needs a nap. Heck, they might even pull a prank on you and slip some white powder in your bag! Hey, it's just a big joke!
http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2010/01/tsa_worker_p…
Bucky….I think you're obnoxious. While the officer absolutely should not have been sleeping in the presence of passengers, you could have just told a supervisor. But no….you decided, rather than report it to her superiors, to take her photo and humiliate her by posting on the internet. Again, I'm not saying what she did was right at all, but what you did was wrong too. Just because we all have camera and video capabilities on our phones and Blackberrys these days, doesn't mean we should abuse them. If you really cared about security, you would've reported this immediately to TSA supervisors. I hope you're proud of yourself. You say …"to be fair?!" There is nothing fair about what you did.
If you guys have never worked for TSA then y'all shouldn't be critizing what someone was doing on their break…. as for what "a parent" said, that makes no sense. All TSA is capable of doing is SCREENING people before they board the plane. So all that other stuff you're saying about smudging your police record is just dumb… I'm sorry that y'all don't see how important and at the same time stressful that job can get. To y'all its just an inconvenience, a waste of time before you get to where you are going. But say that to the people who had loved ones on one of the 9/11 flights, I bet you they don't think its a waste…. but back to this officer, we have shifts that start at 4 in the morning, we have long never ending lines for hrs at a time and not every terminal has a break room so when you wanna catch some z's you have to do it where you can. So if you don't know the whole story just don't say anything….. P.S. to make your life easier and ours learn the damn rules and follow them……
@ "a parent"
What the heck are you doing when you're traveling that they are detaining you until the police show up?? If its something illegal don't you think you deserve to be detained?? Well maybe we should be watching YOU and not her sleeping….
thanks for helping further along the cultural shift to a nation of jerks. jerk.
Who the hell sleeps on the job? Some of you are actually defending this? She should be fired!
You are a jerk. It's self explanatory why you are so I find it even redundant to point it out. Get over yourself, a-hole! And, I am not in public service.
This is a dick move. She was on her break, for God's sake, leave her alone. Publishing her face so you can pass judgment on her for a minor transgression? FAIL.
another heaping of scorn for buzzkill bucky:
http://gothamist.com/2010/01/28/tsa_work_under_in…
Fifty bucks says all the folks defending here on this board are overpaid union workers who are overtly dedicated to keeping their jobs regardless of their incompetence, poor performance or dismal attitude. Those types are simply a cancer in our hard-working society.
So, "U Don't", you have it on good authority that 9/11 families feel more secure with TSA on the scene? Well, U Don't Know What U R Talking 'Bout. The TSA is window dressing. Another government program to separate tax dollars from the rubes, and parcel them out to people who sleep at work. Yes, regardless of whether she didn't feel good, was on break, whatever, you have to be some kind of a moron to work for the TSA and go to sleep at work. Shows you that government workers don't care who pays their bills, they don't care about what they are doing, and definitely have no idea about PR. Public servants, my ass. I just can't wait until they are unionized! They'll never be able to be fired, and will suck even more!
BTW Bucky – I believe the guy who caused all the problems at Newark a couple weeks back got the same desk job treatment. SOP for government workers.
thats fucked up, for all the reasons previously mentioned. she prob has kids to take care of at home too, but now will have a harder time with things because of this jerkoff who has nothing better to do that fuck with strangers' lives, apparently.
and to non-sleeper, i am not a unionized worker. where can i pick up my fifty?
Think this through folks. This is YOUR TSA at work. (or not working) If I fall asleep at my job, while on duty, I'd get fired. Remember, when she woke up she went back to screening passengers.
"We recognize that our officers have very demanding jobs that require constant vigilance and hours on their feet," TSA spokeswoman Ann Davis said.
"But nonetheless, it was completely inappropriate for her to rest in a public area while on her break as opposed to a nearby break room."
End the bailouts, failure IS an option.
First of all the one that took the picture your an IDIOT. Look where she is napping, thats no where near a checkpoint. She is in a passanger waiting area. Maybe you should get a life and worry more about yourself. Also to " A PARENT"… UYou should worry about your kids and what they so. Starting early in the morning with a 4am shifts is not easy. No matter how long you been working such an early shift will you get use to the hours. You should be happy that there are people out there willing to make your flight safe. TO " JAMES "… I bet if you where working there you wouldnt be saying that crap. I wonder if you have a job? Probably not. Anyway, For all of you that think she is wrong, why dont you work for TSA and see how it feels to be in their shoes and put with all the crap that goes on. Follow the rules and there will be no problem and it will also be better for those that do appreciat the work they do. I THANK TSA FOR ALL THEIR HARD WORK.. KEEP IT UP GUY's!!!!!
I know this person was on break. By the look of it she is not near a screening checkpoint. It is none of your business to be photographing people and seeing what they do on break. I hope you know you just caused her to lose her job. You decided to take a picture and posting it up and not knowing the consequences. You don't know if she has kids or a family to feed. Now she is not going to have a job. In this economy it is hard enough to find a job. One photo has many speculations and only one is right. The officer was on break. I hope you can live with what you have done and I hope no one does it to you. But then again maybe you will understand how one picture a complete stanger takes makes you lose your job.
@U dont know wat its like
http://www.gadling.com/2009/04/02/tsa-detains-man…
thing like this happen all the time but this is one incident that the person spoke up about and told the media.
you sir are an idiot.
Good god, I came here from another site just to chime in that you, sir, are a raging d-bag…hope you feel good about yourself, no one else does
I, too, logged in just to say Bucky, you're a scumbag and I wish I had the internet savvy to get your site hacked for this asshole move.
"Hey, my website got a few more hits for this pic, hooray! Damned be this woman's livelihood and family now that she no longer has a paycheck."
I know the woman . She is a fine person and screener. She is now UNEMPLOYED in this economy. I hope you are proud you miserable person. I guess animals are more imprtant than people too you. Once again I hiope YOU ARE PROUD of YOUR Miserable SELF.
@Frankie: From what I heard, assuming she doesn't have any problems with previous negligence on her file, she has the opportunity to appeal. I'd prefer she be punished to getting fired and have no desire to see her made a scapegoat for an agency rife with problems.
Also: I still have World Trade Center dust in my lungs because
TSAworkers didn't do their job on 9/11 so excuse me if I'm still a little vigilant and take these things a little more seriously. And this wasn't done for publicity but as the most effective method of pushing the TSA into action and will hopefully get people asking more questions that need to be addressed.
Dude, I hope you're in need of extra security, cause you just hired yourself a screener.
BUCKY U ARE A SMUT. U HAD NOTHING BETTER ELSE TO DO THAN TO COST THIS WOMAN HER JOB. I WORKED IN THE AIRPORT AND I KNO HOW IT FEELS TO DEAL WITH MISERABLE PPL LIKE U. WAT UR FLIGHT WAS DELAYED OR SOMETHING? FREAKING SMUT!!!!!!!!!!!!
AND FOR THE REST OF U THAT ARE GETTING AT HER YA NEED A LIFE. SHE WAS PROBABLY ON BREAK WTF, TSA IS A HARD JOB..
Hey Turco you dumb prick for your information TSA was created AFTER the 9/11, and let me ask you since then how many terrorists attacks have ocurred on flights departing from any U.S. city? how many? hummm, now TSA is not perfect but at least they try the best, so get your facts straight, okay?,..I'd bet you were just upset if not miserable, because probably one of the officers took away some of your liquids, I bet that's what happened, just simply because you are an ignorant man who can't follow simply rules, that's all, it's totally wrong what you did, you've embarrased that poor girl in front of his friends, family and probably big part of the country, there are some stuff you just can't do, you have no idea and can't be assuming stuff that's not it, maybe she was feeling a little sick, tired, whatever reason…IT IS NOT YOUR JOB TO DETERMINE WHAT WAS SHE DOING THERE AND REASON?…fatboy I hope you will be able to sleep good from now…
@ronny
just…shut the fuck up.
http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2010/01/tsa_worker_p…
@parent. Put down the straw, wipe the residue off your nose and check on your kids.
Bucky you're a loser and karma is sweet. Your blog sucks as do 98% of the rest of you citizen journalist
polluting the Internet. Get a real job sucktard and mind your own business in the future.
Hey Turco, everyone who lived in this city after that morning sept 11 2001 has dust in their lungs. What makes you so special?
You disgusting pig. Great journalism. Don't bother to get any facts of what the situation is, and get that woman fired in this economy. Happy with yourself? Need to bring down someone else because you're a miserable jerk? I saw the newsstand guy at 57th and 8th dozing the other day when I wanted to buy some gum and he didn't snap to at my mere presence. You might want to gather up your self righteous indignation and run over there. And for the record I've never been a union member, and don't even know anyone who is.
I certainly don't know the whole story behind this anymore than you do. If she is on break, and wanted to take a cat nap she should be out of the public's eye, as this is a poor reflection on TSA. I doubt she would be terminated for this. The appropriate course of action would be to notify one her co-workers or supervisor. Since the Detroit incident many Officers have been working mandatory overtime in all aspects of airport security. Unless you do my job you have absolutely no clue what all is involved with airport security. As far as your mentioning about the failure of TSA on 9/11 …TSA did not exist then. Next time, think before you're so anxious to make a name for yourself.
Yeah a lot of you just proved how dumb you are.You all are tryna talk about something you have no idea about…. @ Ferd, yeah I had quite a few families of 9/11 victims come thru the airport and say how they appreciated the job we were doing. I, like many other TSA workers see the importance in what we do and we try very hard to keep all of you flyers safe. No we're not perfect but we do our best. We are only human. But if you idiots would stop tryna come thru with y'all crap that y'all know you can't bring and then tryna find all the excuses in the world to keep them it would make our jobs much easier and maybe you won't find yourself being detained and additionally screened… FYI TSA was created AFTER 9/11… so blame it on the private security, cuz TSA do things 100% better and totally different. @ a parent, you're just a loser and you have no idea what you are talking about. Take care of your kids and stay off the computer cuz you're not helping yourself look good at all
@U dont know wat its like
i bet your at work right now on your blackberry. LOL
@ a parent
LMFAO, actually I'm not… I'm on my G1 LOL
World Trade Center oh yeah I remember that. I worked there 14 years.
You weren't the only one affected by 9/11 so shut the fuck up. All of us breathed in and continue to breathe that crap in. I have friends who never had asthma before 9/11. Since you're making it a contest, I lived at the time and still live on West Street. Does that make my 9/11 experience more valid? Tell me where I fit in on your validation scale. Jerk.
I love that all of this righteous outrage is coming from an adult that has chosen to go by the name "Bucky"
If you're going to invoke 9/11, at least get your facts straight. Before 9/11 box cutters were allowed on airplanes, so the hijackers exploited that rule. The flights took off from Boston, Newark and Washington DC. By your logic, the hijackers got impossibly lucky and managed to get 10+ people through 3 different airports' security screening areas all on account of employee incompetence.
Pull your head out of your ass, be a human, and apologize to the woman who lost her job because some fucking graffiti blogger decided to become a air safety activist.
Does amine care that sheaybe a mother supporting a family and now she maybe unemployeed!? Nice work getting someone fired when you don't know the full story snitch
I'll just say one more thing and then leave it for good. You may think you're cute posting this pic for all to see. Maybe you think you are a hero. Actually you have made our job that much more difficult and in the process the public less safe.
We , like our friend who can't get a Federal Job for the rest of her life, get up at 2 AM every day to go in and protect a public that is increasingly hostile to us.. We contract MRSA and H1n1 at a higher rate than most of the population. We encounter disrespect from the very people we strive to keep safe. Being a 9-11 survivor I take pride in this, and yet the people we protect don't take their own safety seriously at all. You have ended the career of a dedicated person and somehow you feel that it is nothing.
Perhaps you should take a good look at yourself and you will realize there is a lacking within you that causes you to harm others to so you get this false feeling of self worth.
oh yeah and we long ago forgot what eight hours of sleep is like
and I'll take that 50 bucks pleasel
hi bucky you remind of the dirty ass nco's i serve with in iraq the one's that talk all that crap about the rules and policy and then broke the rules, and policy them selves. i bet you are some sorry dude who sat around in a office all day. while us blue collar workers bust our ass to make this world a better place to live in. the right thing would have been to talk to her supervisor. or do you know what a supervisor is? i believe your reason for posting this nice woman face all over the internet was to get media attention, and to jump up and down hey every body look at me! yes bucky the people are looking at you and saying what a jackass.
Did you receive written permission from this woman to post her image on the internet?
Does this still allow my airway to get air while I sleep?
My sons mother works for the TSA, although i cant stand her sometimes, i feel for her because i been hearing alot of stories of how unfairly TSA workers are being treated by supervisors, its not even the TSA officer's nor supervisors fault, but there are some TSA supervisors out there who need to be more considerate, 1st of all my sons mother says there arent enough female screeners, for that she hardly gets a break, her shift starts at 4am, she doesn't get a break til after 9 am sometimes and never the full 30 mins, and for the two (15 minute) breaks..hehehe you can forget about it, its bad enough when theres a cigarette crave. So going back at how f*@! up TSA is managed, TSA officers get treated so unfairly, so even though i do not work for TSA, i been seeing that there alot of more complex procedures the TSA officer's gotta go through, even more than that of a police officer. So people out there, I know that sometimes you may hate the officers, hek im still surprised that after all these yrs, you people still dont read the rules (no liquids over 3 oz. and you still do! WTF !!) remember that TSA officers dont agree at how the screening procedures done, but they still have to take orders from higher ups, its not their fault, and I feel the same way, i get mad when i have to be double screned, i wanna get to my destination safe and complaining doesnt help, I take TSA for granted, but in the end, we need them. my names Chupi from Brooklyn, NY.
Excellent post & Wonderful blog! I would love to get started in a blog too but I don't know where to start. I know I have the abilities to do it (not that hard on the technical part) but I feel like I am too lazy to post regularly… That is definitely the matter, when you get started you have to go all the way…
Damn, that's just as wrong as it can be. Sleeping on a duty? What next? Bringing laptop and making money with some home income programs like http://www.homeincomeprofitsystemkit.com/
These youngjordan retros adult females share a popularjordan fusions characteristic: red gown, aged 25 a long time or younger. Area momentary panic, young women didn’t dare to go out wearing a red jacket.
