‘Watching You, Watching Me’ Stare at My Reflection

Swedish photographer Moa Karlberg captured pedestrian strangers checking themselves out in one-way-mirror reflections, from the other side of the glass. Sneaky. The subjects of Watching Me, Watching You stare quite revealingly when confronted with themselves, yet, there is a certain sterile calm about these portraits through glass. Read more »

Mubarak Was Just Fu#%ing Around Last Night

Yesterday, it appeared that everyone from the people of Egypt to the news media had got it wrong about President Mubarak stepping down after the dictator appeared on state TV and gave a buzzkilling speech, promising to stay in office until there’s a safe transition of power. That totally bummed everyone out till earlier today, when Vice President Omar Suleiman announced that Mubarak has resigned and the military is now in control. This website made it official.

DIY Clap-Off Bra

In Syrian bazaars, they sell electronic singing panties, feathered clap-off bras and light-up lingerie that are probably a little too creative for most non-stripper types — but in Syria, it’s quite a culturally normal marital hobby. Parting Shot

Artist Antony Gormley wants to be very direct that this new work in Canterbury Cathedral, UK is about the body as a “house” of “thought, feeling, memory and anticipation.” So, it’s neither about Jesus – despite all those nails -  nor encasement fetishism, nor Hellraiser. (Photo: ArtDaily)

Unless She Does Leg Thing, Stop Comparing Lindsay Lohan to Catherine Tramell

Lindsay Lohan had to make a court appearance in LA yesterday for allegedly stealing some necklace—hey at least it wasn’t for drugs—so she wore a dress, a nicely fitted white one, and it’s now more important than the why she went to court in the first place. According to the likes of TMZ and amNY, the professional bad girl was obviously channeling Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct, a movie that came out when Lindsay was six-years-old. But they are right about one thing: both the dresses are white.

Tree-a-thon at the Getty

The Getty’s hefty permanent photography collection if full of trees. Their current In Focus series is a forest of branch abstractions, root daguerreotypes and many hues of green. Highlight: photos from contemporary South Korean photographer Myoung Ho Lee who treats trees to lit-up curtains like they’re very special, as if we need them to breathe oxygen or something. “Focus: The Tree,” Group Show, Feb 8 – Jul 3, Getty Center, Los Angeles

U.S. Continues ‘Pyrrhic War’ On Drugs

According to Reuters and others, the U.S. government is stepping up its cocaine eradication efforts in Colombia—HA! Yet, somehow, despite all the aid sent ($6 billion in the last 11 years), military assistance, and intelligence, the South American country still manages to be the world’s leading supplier, just like Afghanistan is for heroin. How is that wherever we deploy the most anti-drug assets, the more drugs there are? Must be a coincidence or something.

Egyptians Overthrow Malcom Gladwell’s Theory

Marketer of marketing and man with an afro, Malcom Gladwell, wrote an extensive piece for the New Yorker last October criticizing the importance of social networking when it comes to revolutions and things. He basically argued that the media gives websites like Facebook and Twitter way too much credit, but not even the illustrious trend forecaster could have predicted what would happen in Egypt. As of tonight, President Mubark is reportedly stepping down. UPDATE: Everyone from the people of Egypt to the news media got it wrong, he’s pretty much staying. Read more »
