NYC Sends Out NYPD – Critical Mass Settlement Checks

Last year, the City settled a class action lawsuit with 83 cyclists who were wrongly arrested by the NYPD during Critical Mass rides and this week the checks totaling $965,000 were sent out.

Bike advocacy group Time Up estimates that the final costs of the NYPD’s aggressive campaign could exceed $3 million, but that hasn’t influenced the police to change their tactics and judging by their presence at last month’s ride, they’re still running with the heavy handed approach.

None of those cars were parked. They were actually doing the right thing by having their hazard lights on.

Wow. I had no idea that if I stop my car in a loading zone or a bike lane, all I have to do is turn on my hazards and its not illegal!!! Tell that to the police, I bet they don't know that!

From the sound of it, you don't know a lot of things.

It's illegal to stop in a bike lane, even if your hazzards are on according to NYC Traffic Rule § 4-08 (e)(9) –

No parking, standing or stopping vehicles within or otherwise obstructing bike lanes. Fine is $115.

But putting you hazard lights on is polite. I said "right" not "legal." And remind me to complain that cops never write tickets when bikers fail to use a turn signal or rarely when they ride the wrong way down a street.
