Irina Nakhova’s ‘Rooms’ Recreated in Moscow

Meet the mother of Russian “total installations” who penetrated the boys-only club of the Moscow Conceptual Circle. The MMMA is exhibiting 40-years-worth of Irina Nakhov’s conceptual art. One of the ‘Rooms’ from her five-part, ground-breaking apartment installation is reconstructed in detail. Now go back to 1984 and pretend you’ve never seen that before. Ooh. Aah. “Rooms,” Irina Nakhova, May 19 – July 3, Moscow’s Museum of Modern Art, Moscow

Whoever Yung Jake is, he gets datamosh. You know, that glitchy genre of video art that makes you think your computer is broken? Love it. Video artist Nicolas Provost’s New Flesh is the best in game, but this is the damn theme song. Read more »

City Council Moves to Ban Malt Beverages

Now that all of NYC’s major problems have been addressed and solved, the Health Department is urging the City Council to outlaw TOTALLY LEGAL malt beverages like Smirnoff Ice, Barcadi Breezer, and other flavored, alcohol-infused products that are commonly referred to as “alcopop.” I’d love to write this off as political bluster, but they were able to ban Four Loko with little resistance and have made cigarettes virtually illegal, while also setting their sights on sugary drinks and salt. C’mon people, there has to be more ways to baby-proof adult society. What other widely available items should be prohibited?

Brooklyn-based, Bologna-born artist Federico Solmi is under fire in Ancona, Italy for his upcoming exhibit featuring an animated, porn-addicted, bloody pervert Pope of Vatic-Anal-City. The exhibition space hosting Solmi’s June-July art show will be welcoming the real Pope Benedict XVI in September for the grand Catholic hoopla of the Eucharistic Congress… in the same room. Uh-oh. Why Aren’t DHS Funds Diverted to Firehouses?

Now that NYC will receive $151.5 million from the Department of Homeland Security, why can’t some of that money be used to keep crucial firehouses open? Perhaps we should temper down the NYPD’s useless “Ring of Steel” and invest the money in programs that are time-tested when it comes to defending against terrorism, like ya know… firefighters. Also, out of the all the locations they can’t find any money to keep the Ghostbusters one open?

Baby Goose Presumed Dead

Earlier this month, despite a blatant murder attempt by humans armed with corn oil, six goose eggs hatched in the hostile wilderness that is Prospect Park and although two died right away, four goslings survived, until now. The Brooklyn Paper sadly reports that one of those baby geese has gone missing and is likely dead. Amazingly, Mother Nature is the likely culprit, not man. (Photo: Tom Callan/TheBrooklynPaper)

Lui Liu: Chinese-Canadian Caravaggio

In his Yin series, Chinese expat Lui Liu paints nubile Eastern, Western and occasionally tattooed and fashionably bespeckled nudes in a classical style. Partially dressed in old Europe and ancient China dreads, they’re trudging through surreal landscapes and laying about in girlie clusters. In his Yang series, things got a lot weirder.
