Krokodil is ten times harder and three times cheaper than heroin. Its usage is reportedly reaching epidemic levels in Russia, and only in Russia. There’s no shortage of stomach-churning visuals of krokodil-lovers with their limbs spilling open with rot. Yeah, this one is yucky. (NSFW).
The high from this home-cooked, desomorphine-based cocktail of gasoline, hydrochloric acid, red phosphorous scraped from matchboxes and other toxic miscellany lasts an hour. It originated in former Gulag towns of Siberia in 2002, but spread among the poor nationwide. Its nickname “krokodil” means crocodile – after the particular sort of green, scaly gangrene it causes. Naturally, the government and the medical community are concerned, flooding all available media outlets with nightmarish photos like these:

i doubt the russian government gave the addicts heroin for the first time. or anytime for that matter. drug addicts steal, sell themselves, scam and anything they can do to get money to pay for addiction. stop defending the drug addicts and attacking those trying to help. regardless if you agree with their methods, they are doing what they have to do to stop criminals and junkies from impeding on the rest of society.

Selling any kind of drug to anyone is "simply immoral". I work as a counselor in a detox unit and I see, first hand, that MOST addicts become thieves. And as far as thinking you have not hurt anyone, you are completely delusional!!!! You sold addictive drugs to drug addicts, therefore aiding in their destruction! As they say in the north of England "There's nowt as queer as folk" (the word "queer" means peculiar or strange in this context) What I don't understand is why these sensation-seekers use such a destructive method to get their kicks. Perhaps the Russian government ought to set up bungee-jumping stations or some other way to amuse their population. OK winter in northern Europe can be pretty dismal until one looks on the bright side and thinks positively. The cold gets rid of the flies and tourists and there are fewer squabbles about parking; noisy lawnmowers are no longer heard. Roll-on winter!
Nobody starts out saying, "I wanna trade my arms and legs for a year of getting super-high." It starts out much slower than that. Maybe you take a bunch of caffiene pills to stay awake and find you really like the stimulation. Next thing you know you're trying something harder to get the buzz, and then you move on to herion. At each point the alternative of experiencing painful withdrawal symptoms is worse than continuing to get high, especially in the short term. Next thing you know you're too poor to afford heroin so you try this once or twice. Finally now you've got a choice between pain strokes for a month and a slow death where you can at least mask the pain intermittently. Its a dilemma that no sane person would want to put themselves through. Unfortunately there are those that don't recognize where the path is heading until a block before they get there.

This should be irrefutable evidence that no matter how scarce governments and drug enforcement personnel manage to make all of the drugs that are already around, with relatively safe profiles compared to this krokodil mess, the demand will NEVER wane, leading drug users to these new and horrific drugs. This is the first drug I've ever seen where the negatives of the drug outweigh the negative impact of the drug laws and prison sentences. THEY WILL NEVER STOP DEMAND! So there will always be born a supplier or whatever satisfies the demand. If Heroin were legal in Russia, this wouldn't be happening at all. The people who use it all say in other articles that if Heroin were available, they'd surely do that instead.
People take drugs to feel good or to seek oblivion. What does that tell you? That normally they feel bad and/or they are overwhelmed by existence. The scenario that unfolds with those who become addicted is something like a slow motion mousetrap. These people are the casualties of modern life. They do not have the tools to cope with it. Some will recover and I believe that disseminating this information will prevent some from crossing the line. Anorexics, cutters, alcoholics, over eaters, sex/love addicts, smokers, are, initially, all seeking some sort of respite and these behaviors become psychologically and/or physically compulsive.

Yes, the same can be said for pharmacies and "pill mills" (pain management clinics), and any other place that sells addictive drugs to people. By no means am I an expert, but of my 24 years on this earth I spent 7 of them in the depths of a crushing IV heroin addiction…and in my experience, what david posted is pretty accurate. We value instant gratification above all else, especially when it comes to not being in horrifying pain. In the 7 years i spent dependent on heroin, I estimate that I tried to kick over 100 times to no avail. Each attempt would fail the same way; after 3 or 4 days of detox/withdrawal, when i was finally over the hump, i would become frustrated with being in pain for so many days that i would go out and get off even though the pain would begin to cease soon and was already approaching the end of detox.
They invent this drug because the pushers want to make MORE money! Money the addicts dont have! So first they get addicted, then the drug becomes too expensive and they invent this terrible mixture! These films are a prime example and should be shown worldwide! Why does this only happen in Russia?

This drug is intense! I am a Chemistry student and we just did a whole lesson on drugs in my Criminalistics class and they said this is the most addictive drug yet and the life span of people who take it is 2-3 years… I don't know, I can think of much better ways to spend my time. Plus isn't the point of doing a drug is to live long enough to enjoy it…

I would agree. No one deliberately sets out to be an addict..and all too often it creeps up unawares, -a person i knew didn't even KNOW they were suffering withdrawals from methadone…they had been using it to be able to work harder, and when they stopped, the exhaustion and agonising leg pains and streaming eyes and runny nose was lost on them. They had no idea it was addictive,but they are still addicted, 30 yrs later. With drugs, it can be as little as enjoying side effects from painkillers-and the person continues to get them long after the original pain has gone. Many an addict started off by having the odd smoke of heroin on a once-weekly basis, thinking they would avoid addiction.
I'm a doctor, Ive seen it in real life, and it's real. It looks freshly debrided (cleaned) with the exception of the purulent nastiness hanging from her forearm, so my guess is that she has been able to pick off the dead tissue herself because of her inability to feel the pain when high on the krokodil opiate. good times.

I can only imagine that she would have picked off the dead tissue herself to reveal the living muscle tissue that ya see on the left end of that photo. Again, this would have been possible because of her inability to feel the pain. Interesting, but ieeew nonetheless, and how very sad.
As a person in recovery, I feel for these people. At one point, I would have taken anything you gave me to avoid the effects of withdrawal. It HURTS! If you ever get to the point where the solution hurts more than your actual life, then you'll be ready. Even if those on this drug are stopped, unless they are ready, they'll do it again.
This is the issue. I NEVER started out to become a full-blown addict. I bet MY money, if I had been introduced to this drug as a sub. for pain-killers, I would have done it. I most likely would have let my arm fall off so I could go to the hosp. and get more high-powered pain killers.
