Canadian artist Maskull Lasserre master-carves backbones out of branches, fetus skulls out of bedposts and pianos into hunks of hanging meat. He chisels at a flock of wooden hangers until they look like a cluster of bird wing bones. Maybe the axe is less functional as a weapon with its body turned into a delicate serpent skeleton, but it’s badass. Brooklyn public artist Leon Reid IV’s bid to dress up Union Square Park’s Washington statue as a tourist had succeeded on Kickstarter but was rejected by the New York Parks Department. Reid was going to use Kickstarter funds to create oversize props for the monument in time for the Art In Odd Places festival this October, but alas. The artist has previously updated a Lincoln statue into a bling-flaunting True Yank in Manchester, where officials had exhibited a more art-friendly sense of humor.
