Tourist-in-Chief: Dress Up Union Square’s Washington Statue

Brooklyn public artist Leon Reid IV has previously turned a Lincoln statue in Manchester into True Yank, complete with a Yankee hat, an Africa Medallion and gold “Union” bling. Now he wants to update the statue of George Washington in Union Square by decking it out with large scale props resembling typical tourist regalia like an I♥NY hat, a map and some local shopping bags.

Proceed to Kickstarter to make this “contemporary monument to tourism” a reality in time for the Art In Odd Places festival this October. Kickstarter funds will be used for prop fabrication, installation, de-installation and documentation.

  1. This used to be called a "prank" can we please refocus the time energy and funding for such "art" towards trying to comprehend the political and corporate forces that are steadily lowering our basic standard of living here in the United States?

    Thanks!

get off your high horse, you clearly do not know what art is. Why do you need art to tell you about politics and corporate forces making your standard of living lower. Read a paper, make a change. some times art can just be fun.

one more thing bigtalkers, this is privately funded. So if you don't want to support it you don't have too. And if you had a clue about art funding you wouldn't be complaining about this.

this is great art! especially kids will be attracted by the colorful props. it is educational, uplifting and loving towards American culture! Thumbs up!!!

  5. My friend is getting married and she wants the bridesmaids to wear birdcage veils and a floor-length dress. She’s letting us choose the style of our dress, but I have no idea what floor-length dress would look good with a birdcage veil! Help?
