New York Times Pens 5Pointz Obituary
Although it’s not quite dead yet, NYC’s largest legal graffiti-mural spot might as well be. The New York Times wrote about the inevitable closing of the facility, which one person described as the “United Nations of graffiti.” Which is true, except for the diplomacy part.
Building owner Jerry Wolkoff is pretty dictatorial about its impending destruction, and doesn’t mince any words about his immediate plans for the location.
“There is an evolution going on in that part of Long Island City; the building is old, it doesn’t warrant repairs, and no matter what, it has to come down,” said the 74-year-old developer. (Photo: Sue Peacock/flickr)

Funny, he neglects to mention the incident where a photographer nearly died due to Mr. Wolkoff's negligence in maintaining his building :

Saying that this is about the " evolution of LIC " is a slap in the face to both the girl who almost died as a result of Mr. Wolkoff's negligence, as well as to the global graffiti community that made 5Ptz the international cultural landmark it has become.This is less about evolution and more about an old man making a desperate attempt to cover his ass in light of the possibility of being sued for nearly half a billion. The end result? NYC losing one of it's most important cultural landmarks and a young woman almost losing her life.
