The New York Parks Department rejected Tourist in Chief, but Brooklyn artist Leon Reid IV still wants to deck out Union Square’s Washington statue in over-sized tourist bling. Spencer’s Gifts Coming To Soho. Why!?

This morning, the Observer posted about Spencer’s Gifts moving into Soho. They blamed everyone’s least favorite neighbors, NYU, for the store’s Broadway debut. But what’s the point of having a Spencer’s Gifts in NYC? Isn’t that what Ricky’s is for? Was walking to St. Marks to get trashy jewelry and backlight posters of Bob Marley too far of a walk for y’all? Spencer’s Gifts can’t survive in the sea of random crap stores that New York already has. It’s a long time mall favorite and seeing the whoopee cushions again will be nice, but get us a fucking Orange Julius already.

Lady Gaga and Matthew Barney Together in Art

Jonnie Engelhardt Lautenberg’s portraits of Lady Gaga live and Matthew Barney Cremaster 2 epic ephemera meet at RH Gallery’s upcoming group show Melodymania, named for the earworm syndrome. Ooh. But whoever runs the Twitter account for the controversial facility is doing a proficient job of making sure everyone knows that there’s no danger of an imminent meltdown (yet). Read more »

Topless Rights Protestors Protest Topless in Central Park

When it’s National Go Topless Day, chicks in other cities are gluing on fake nipples to avoid cop troubles, but we don’t do that sacrilege in NYC. Ladies can go shirtless, wherever dudes can, so here’re some feminists saluting “equal topless rights” with nude boobs and moobs in Central Park on Sunday. NSFW. Read more »

A bar in Brighton Beach is running a new promo: Anyone capable of drinking five liters of beer in less than two hours, qualifies for a free half-liter of beer for life “with a purchase.” The other catch is that you can’t throw up.

This Jesus Mickey Mouse Painting is Banned in Russia

This work is “extremist!” The Russian courts have taken one more morally misguided step towards letting the zealots criminalize heresy by banning this Mickey Mouse as Jesus Christ mid-Sermon on the Mount art from exhibitions, newspapers, magazines and television, lest the ruling is appealed. Russia’s regressive criminal code’s Article 282 – outlawing “hate speech” in theory and censoring “religiously offensive” art in practice — strikes again! Read more »
