High Line Hell for Some Small Businesses

One consistent thing about New York City is this: Consensus is impossible. So, it’s not that surprising to hear that some mom and pop shops aren’t big fans of the new High Line park according to amNewYork. “The High Line sucks,” said the owner of an auto parts supplier. He told the paper that his profits are down more than 30 percent since the debut of the fancy train trestle. How’s that possible?

We can understand why smaller businesses are complaining about jacked-up rents as real estate developers swoop in to snatch up premium locations along the elevated stretch, but that’s not what he’s saying. Is it possible that he’s blaming the economic downturn, currently being experienced all over the county, on the High Line?

Claiming he “feared retribution by Mayor Michael Bloomberg,” the man refused to give his name.

Meanwhile, auto shop owner Alan Brownfield is very honest about his plight. He says his landlord refuses to renew his lease, probably so the property can be rented out at a much higher rate. That’s not the only thing bothering him. “There used to be hookers all over the block … now you can’t even find one,” said Brownfield. And that sucks. (Photo: ANIMALNewYork)
