Painterly Photographs of Butterflies Drowned in Black

Photographer  Alexander James of Distil Ennui Studio has found another use for his 7000 gallon custom made tank. Following up on his ’Vanitas’ series of pure, unedited portraits of drowned roses, the anti-art school artist returns with Underwater Butterfly. There’s a beautiful morbidity to these festive insect corpses suspended in water, the natural-occurring distortions and the eerie minimalism speaking on the water’s “transient and destructive nature,” exposing “the fragility of life and the temporary nature of our existence.” Also: Better than Damien Hirst’s crotch tat.

An Army of People Busted for Weed Last Year

According to the latest FBI data, way too many Americans are getting arrested for weed. In 2010, police busted over 850,000 people on pot-related offenses. As NORML notes, that accounts for “more than one-half (52 percent) of all drug arrests in the Untied States,” of those, 46 percent were for possession. It’s no wonder law enforcement doesn’t want to legalize the herb. It’s their bread and butter. (Photo: Sp▲ce C▲det/flickr) Read more »

Lou Reed Poster Banned in London Subway: “Looks Like Graffiti”

Transport for London has censored this poster promoting Lou Reed and Metallica’s colab album Lulu from the London Underground as “it looked to much like graffiti.” Really! In a move similar yet nuttier than last year’s, when they outlawed Massive Attack’s Heligoland album poster for its graffiti-esque paint dribbles, the tattered mannequin and offending bloody font was banned from tubes and stations. Apparently, printed finger-paint is graffiti now.

Tiananmen Squared: Old School Video Game Art Show

Casey Weldon’s Atari “Combat” inspired Tiananmen Squared and a Super Smooth Mario from Dabs Myla are just some of the painterly, sculpture-ly, embroidery-ly, arty ditties at Gallery 1988′s latest themed group exhibit. They’ve got lots, because vintage gaming is bottomless barrel of fan art fodder and shall always be. “Old School Video Game Show,” Group Show, Sep 16 – Oct 8, Gallery 1988: Venice, Los Angeles

At 7AM this morning, the highly anticipated Bushwick IHOP opened to the public. We decided to pop in and check it out, this time with permission.
