Brooklyn Business Tired of ‘BS’ Graffiti
The owner of a film and TV production company in Greenpoint hates a certain graffiti tag that has been popping up near his business for the past nine months or so and is ready to take action.
Broadway Stages’ Tony Argento is offering up a $5,000 reward for anyone willing to snitch on identify the person who puts up the letters “BS,” hoping to stop him bombing the entire neighborhood.
Greenpoint artist NoJCohley attempted to shine a light on the case by lending an artist’s perspective to the Brooklyn Paper: “He is doing a great job of doing what graffiti artists do — destroying property,” he goes on to say that the “majority of ‘graff’ writers don’t want a show in a gallery or even money for their efforts in the public space.”
Deputy Inspector Terence Hurson of the 94th Precinct has said that they are looking for multiple suspects. According to him, “It’s a whole team of people who write their initials within the ‘BS, I saw it twice on the way back from a meeting today. Once you start looking for it, you notice it everywhere.” It’s almost as if an entire graffiti crew is doing it, huh? I actually saw a show the other day in which the host toured folks round GP showing off its graffiti! it is amazing that just a few short years ago our mayors campaigned heavily against 'rebel' street art and cleaned up property defaced by graffiti artists in less desirable areas, public transportation and buildings. I think that the property owners and artists should have a clandestine meeting, to protect the privacy of the artists, and come up with a compromise. Fighting is futile. Can a designated "white" space be left on the property walls to show case the art? Can an online system be in place that allows artists to ask permission for and for a certain amount of time to showcase their work? Can artists seek support at community meetings and help change the public's attitude about graffiti,you know, have history of graffiti talks/walking tours lead by artists? There has to be creative ways to appease both entities. I, for one, would be pissed as hell if my property were defaced simply because NO ONE has the right to f$%^ my 6-figure property up just he or she wants to! Install night camera's, bright lights, 24hr watches, or hire neighborhood kids as look out. Artists who feel entitled to deface ought to be punished.
