There’s a very unsanitary public space in Manhattan that could use a thorough scrubbing, but it’s not located a few blocks north of Wall Street, and is more likely to be occupied by rats than people. We’re of course talking about the Chambers Street subway station below City Hall. It’s dingy, stinks of urine, and unlike Zuccotti Park, doesn’t have anyone giving it the attention it needs. In spite of being on virtual house arrest in China, world’s most powerful artist Ai Weiwei has directed a cover photo shoot for W Magazine via Skype from his studio in Beijing. Inspired by Ai’s own photos of the 1980′s Tompkins Square riots, the feature stars a fashionable PYT getting kidnapped from a protest, dragged off by grim official-looking types and forced to shower in front of them in a disused part of the Rikers Island prison. Transportation Alternatives has revamped their Crashstat website and as cyclists continue to be villainized, it’s more relevant than other. The interactive map shows precisely where people have been hit by vehicles, whether they were walking or biking, and plots it. The sheer number of these visual representations is a staggering and potent reminder to what the real danger is: cars.
