Shepard Fairey Doesn’t Get Occupy Wall St

Recently, Shepard Fairey explained how he’s down with Occupy Wall Street and their message, but it’s hard to believe he ever bothered to understand what the movement is all about on even the most fundamental level in light of this new illustration he did to show “his support.” Perhaps he should start here and read the General Assembly’s “Statement of Autonomy” where OWS explicitly states that it has no interest in either political party. Both have failed the people, contributed to the corporate sabotage of the nation’s economic system and clearly don’t represent the 99%. Nice try though.

Feminist Sparks Egyptian Outrage with Nude Picture

This week, outrage spread throughout Egypt due to one brave 20-year old woman, Aliaa Magda Elmahdy, who dared to voice her sexual and creative freedom by posting a fully nude portrait of herself on her blog. Obviously it’s hard for Americans to grasp the outpour of shock this can produce in a country like Egypt, where even public kissing is shunned, but Elmahdy’s actions have become so widespread that they’re even causing debate amidst an already tense political season. NYC Water Main Is Covered With the Stuff Nightmares Are Made Of

ANIMAL friend Meg Robertson was walking on 15th Street near 5th Avenue and snapped photos of a massive pipe laying on the sidewalk. Workers told her they were repairing the sewer and had to remove part of a water main to get to it. One of the guys told her the pipe was “probably 80 or 100 years old” and that the vomit-worthy gunk coating it was “calcium buildup.” Just yuck! (Photos: Meg Robertson/flickr)

ANIMAL PSA

Our beloved art editor, Marina, was hit by a car on Wednesday night and sent flying through the air. She’s currently recuperating at the scariest hospital in all of NYC, but is expected to be discharged later this afternoon, which is great news, because we already miss her!

The Last Thing the NYPD Should Be Doing Is Issuing Press Passes

A longstanding tradition that empowers the NYPD to issue press passes needs to be scrapped. It’s a conflict of interest and threat to free speech, a notion that was exemplified during the raid on Liberty Plaza, when a police-instituted media blackout prevented reporters from doing their jobs. The Observer sums up this preposterous arrangement as “Kafkaesque,” but also notes that it may be an exercise in futility, since several journalists were arrested, and they had press passes.

Pro Occupy Wall Street Messages Projected on Verizon Building

This evening, thousands of people marched across the Brooklyn Bridge in a show of solidarity with Occupy Wall Street. The action was organized by unions and stretched the entire length of the iconic span. But the highlight of the night was the pro-Occupy projections flashing on the Verizon building. Check out video of the guerilla communications below. Read more »
